Last Sunday, August 6th, Mohaymen was eased in the Alydar Stakes. The dirt race of 1 and 1/8 miles (9 furlongs) was not the comeback we had hoped for and thus his connections chose to send him home for some rest and relaxation. Home for Mohaymen is Shadwell Farm.
Mohaymen finished the $100,000 Alydar Stakes in 5th and last place at Saratoga. Rally Cry won by 8 and 3/4 lengths. Mohaymen is reportedly healthy but that was his 8th straight loss following the 5 consecutive wins he achieved in his career. Mohaymen is a gorgeous grey son of Tapit and Justwhistledixie. He is Kentucky bred by Clearsky Farms and he was foaled May 2, 2013. Shadwell Stable aquired Mohaymen at auction from Keeneland . He is trained by Kiaran McLaughlin and his jockey is Junior Alvarado. Mohaymen broke his maiden in his very first effort and then won his next 4 races as well, all were Grade 2 stakes. He won his maiden at Belmont and then he won the Nashua Stakes, the Remsen Stakes, the Holy Bull Stakes and the Fountain of Youth Stakes. Since then he hasn’t been the same. Mohaymen has rested up at Shadwell before. This time they will decide if he races again or retires.
Shadwell, in Lexington, KY is owned by Sheik Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum of Dubai. His silks are blue with white shoulders and a white and blue striped cap. Shadwell was established in 1985. His 3,200 acres in Kentucky has been home to many champion Thoroughbreds. Shadwell is only one of the Shiek’s many horse farms worldwide. Shadwell Stable earned an Eclipse Award in 2007 for Outstanding Owner. In 2006 his Jazil won the Belmont Stakes. In 2007 his Lahudood won her own Eclipse Award for Champion Grass Mare. His horse, Invasor, was inducted into the National Museum and Racing Hall of Fame. His current KY based stallions are Albertus Maximus, Daaher and Tamarkuz. They reside at nearby Nashwan Stud, also owned by the Shiek. In 2017 Shadwell has had 100 North American starts.
I love to tour Kentucky’s local horse farms but unfortunately not all are open to the public. It is wonderful that many farms are within view from my state’s scenic roads. I admire Shadwell from the passenger seat and I hope that you will enjoy some pictures from my vantage point.
I wish for Mohaymen to have a lovely stay in KY. He will always be a champion from my perspective. If he stays at Nashwan to stand stud it would be great if Shadwell will opened their gates to their neigh-bours and offer scheduled tours. You can bet, if they do, I’ll be there!
