Tiz the season for giving. It is time for my annual charity appeal. With the holidays and tax season approaching quickly it is time to remember to give back to the sport that gives you so much entertainment all year long. The horses and the jockeys, who risk their lives to win, need your support. To make it easier for you to give, check on the list and links below.
There are many great charities that support horses and jockeys. Here are the links to some you might wish to support:
- Thoroughbred Charities of America has been serving horses and humans since 1997. This is a blanket group that operates in conjunction with the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Organization to award grants to many individual charities that benefit thoroughbreds and the people on the backstretch and farms. I like this organization because it covers so many small groups that do great work but don’t get as much awareness and attention as some of the others. Send funds here: TOBA
- Old Friends Thoroughbred Retirement Farms have been in operating since 2003. They offer a living museum of retired champion Thoroughbreds. This is a local favorite for me. Such a nice tour and the opportunity to hand feed so many big winners. Click here to help: Old Friends
- After the Homestretch is a charity that re-purposes retired Thoroughbreds. The pictures I used in this story are from my recent visit to Turf Paradise in Phoenix, Arizona. After the Homestretch is located in this city. Here is the link to support them: After the Homestretch
- New Vocations was created in 1992. They take in Thoroughbred and Standardbred horses that need adoption. They assist with rehoming over 400 retired race horses annually. Contribute to them here: New Vocations
- Race Track Chaplaincy of America is a national organization that is located in my hometown of Lexington, KY. This group supports the needs of humans in all aspects of the horse racing industry. Donations can be sent here: Race Track Chaplaincy of America
- The Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund began in 2006. They assist jockeys that are injured while racing and research to minimize future injury to our human athletes. Support them here: PDJF
- The American Association of Equine Practitioners Foundation is also located in my hometown though it operates worldwide. They got their start in 1994 and they work to provide research and education to benefit horses. AAEP comes to mind particularly right now due to the deadly fires in California recently. They are providing disaster relief. Contribute here: AAEP Foundation
There are literally hundreds of great Thoroughbred related charities. These are just a few that stand out to me. Don’t forget to act soon. If you want your favorite charity to be on my next listing send me a comment. I’d be happy to share any approved horse or equine connection organization. Every dollar or dedication of time counts. Thank you.
