Moonshine Bertie with her Speighster filly attend the January Keeneland Sale
Moonshine Bertie’s filly by Speightster attended the January Keeneland Sale

The sale was a success as was getting some new foal photos and video!  Keeneland’s 2018 January Horses of All Ages Sale concluded Thursday, 1/11 with growth in all prices to yield strong results.  Reportedly, two 2018 foals were born just in time to make their own debut in the sale as well and I have some adorable images of one.  Watch her short video included in this concise sales summary.

Here is an easy to follow comparison of 2017’s sale versus this year’s auction:

  • 2017 featured 1,892 cataloged Thoroughbreds/ while 2018 listed 1,583
  • In 2017,  961 head sold/ in 2018, 909 horses were sold at the auction
  • The gross amount in 2017 was $28,785,500/ this year, $34,996,000 was grossed
  • $29,954 was the average price in 2017/the price was up to $38,499 in 2018
  • The median price was $10,500 in 2017/while 2018 saw a rise to $12,000
  • The top price went to Siren Serenade in 2017 at $1,025,000/  this year, Mrs McDougal topped out at $1,600,000

While money may drive the sale I am also a big fan of the cuteness overload.  I was looking for brand new foals and two were in the auction.  Hip 539 was a lovely bay mare, Moonshine Bertie.  She foaled a filly by Speightster early this January.  She is featured in the photos and video throughout this story.  Hip 1104 also had her baby in time for the sale.  Bijoux, a bay mare, was accompanied by her filly, sired by Shackleford.

Without further delay, watch this video I uploaded to Thoroughbred U’s YouTube page last night:

It was a nice sale in some strange weather that spanned from chilling temperatures to Spring like weather with a lot of rain throughout.  I attended on days 1 and 4.  The burgoo was delicious and improved from the October race meet.  I will be posting my burgoo recipe, which tastes much like Keeneland’s version, very soon as well as more Thoroughbred insights and adventures.  Please, check back and share with your friends.
