Same sire, same dam, hold onto your horses, it’s Faversham!  The old phrase that lightening doesn’t strike the same place twice is a sham.  In fact, it is totally wrong, some places get struck over a hundred times a year and all we Chromies really want is one more time, one more chance.  California Chrome has 3 full siblings and we are hoping the youngest has what it takes to follow in his brother’s hooveprints.

California Chrome is a two time Horse of the Year Eclipse Award winner and so much more to his fans, the Chromies.  Chrome was foaled in 2011 to Lucky Pulpit and Love the Chase.  His breeders and owners were sometimes ridiculed for their pedigree selection.  However, something really wonderful came from that breeding.  That something special is California Chrome.

Once the connections of owners, breeders and trainer were on to the one-of-a-kind Thoroughbred that Chrome is, they tried again.  Breeders Steve Coburn and Perry Martin for owners consisting of various combinations of Coburn and/or Martin under the training of Art Sherman have now produced four racing Thoroughbreds by sire Lucky Pulpit and dam Love the Chase.  Following California Chrome, Hope’s Love was foaled in 2013, R Sunday Surprise in 2014 and Faversham in 2015.  Sadly, there will be no more full siblings.  Lucky Pulpit passed away from a heart attack in February of 2017.

Hope’s Love, Chrome’s full sister, raced 5 times at Golden Gate.  She was second in her debut but she only finished worse from there on and her last time out was in May of 2016, when she finished 10th.

R Sunday Surprise, another full sister to Chrome, raced 9 times.  She was third in her debut at Santa Anita but it took her until her 8th race to break her maiden, at Del Mar, finishing 1st in August of 2017.  However, her next and last time out, that October at Santa Anita, she finished 6th.

Now, it is up to the last chance in this family lineage, Faversham.  The connections and the Chromies waited until the 3rd year to race the first full brother to Chrome.  The ridgling colt debuted on Monday, 1/15/18, in a maiden special weight race at Santa Anita.  Just like Chrome he finished second in his first start.  His race showed a lot of promise.  Faversham had a slow break from the gate with jockey Stewart Elliott and quickly fell to last in the field of 8 but he was able to finish the fastest and went wide to pass all but the winner, Violent RidgeFaversham was only 1 and 1/4 lengths behind the winner in the 6 furlong dirt race.  Faversham will compete at a mile and sixteenth next.  The distance should help him go for the win.  The $200,000 California Cup Derby on 2/19/18 is likely his next race.

While we Chromies await the first foals of California Chrome, he no longer races himself, we can also be excited about what may be for his brother, Faversham.  I simply can not wait to see the new babies and I’m very enthusiastic about Faversham’s racing career as well.  Please, help me with breaking news on Chrome foals by posting comments.

Update:  Thanks to the sharing of my fellow Chromies, it is now known that California Chrome’s first foal was born Saturday evening, 1/20/18.  The new colt was born to Pay the Man at Calumet Farm in Lexington, KY.  Congratulations to all Chrome connection and fans!

    1. I like that the news is spreading for Faversham! I wish him all the best!

  5. Chances of fav being a decent race horse are slim. Same for chromes foals. They are very weakly bred on the dam line.

    1. Chrome is very special to me and I’m very enthusiastic and pleased with Faversham.

  6. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Chrome, and now his baby brother has won my heart. Between Faversham and Chrome’s babies, my heart will be overflowing once again. Isn’t is great that you never run out of love? There’s always more!

    1. Love and animals, particularly horses, make the world go round. I am very happy to have more of the Chrome lineage racing and foaling.
