Good morning racing fans! Today is the day we have been waiting for. The finale of our 2017 champion racing season is upon us. For 2 days only, we will witness a lucky 13 signature races that will define many of the world’s best champion Thoroughbreds. Welcome to the Breeders’ Cup!
In 1984 the vision of a world class competition for Thoroughbreds was finally created, the Breeders’ Cup World Championships. 33 years in and the 2 day annual event is still going strong. For the first time ever, Del Mar Race Track in Del Mar, California will host the BC. It is where the turf meets the surf, constructed in 1937 along the scenic beach of the Pacific Ocean.
Today, 11/3/17, the BC will get underway with an initial 4 BC races. Race 1 at Del Mar posts at 11:25 AM Pacific Time. The first BC race is the 6th on the card, the 10th running of The Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. It will post at 2:25 PM PT (this is 5:25 EDT – please, note the 3 hour time difference). It is a Grade 1, 1 mile turf race for 2 year-old fillies with a purse of $1 million dollars. 15 fillies will face off. The 9th race concludes the BC races for Friday, November 3rd. It is the 34th running of The Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff. This race is Grade 1, $2 million dollar, dirt race of 1 and 1/8 miles, for horses 3 years-old and upward. Post time is 4:35 PM PT (7:35 EDT) for the 8 horses entered, see the following link:
The card continues for a 10th race posting at 5:17 PM PT (8:17 EDT) for the first day of the BC World Championships. Then it will be time to rest and recover, or blog in my case, for the 9 more races on 11/4.
Who are your favorites this year? Last year there were so many upsets and photo finishes. I’ll never forget watching American Pharoah take the Grand Slam just 2 years ago. There are so many memories of tremendous horses competing in the BC. Be sure to savor the moments this weekend. NBC Sports Network will televise all 4 of today’s races from 5 to 8 PM EDT. Check back for my post on Day 2!
