Just as April showers bring May flowers, Keeneland’s Spring Meet ushers in the finest in Kentucky racing. The 16 days of live racing took place between April 4th and 26th of 2019. The meet was a success in which 18 stakes, including preps for the Kentucky Oaks and the Kentucky Derby, were raced. Many thoroughbreds added a stakes win to their racing career and new owner, trainer, and jockey titles were announced.

Oh, life in The Horse Capital of the World provides for some many unique Thoroughbred adventures and … a whole lot of rain. One of the many reasons I blog is that in addition to my interesting horse experiences and opportunities I spend a ton of time reading. I like breaking down and consolidating that information into something I can learn from and can share. Most of my literature is from short stories and news that I gather through social media but when I have the time to read a book, I’ll do that as well. Divided up over a beautiful beach trip and the current rainy days without Kentucky Derby prep racing, I finished reading “Betting With An Edge” by Mike Maloney with Peter Thomas Fornatale. For my bye week book review, I present to you, “Betting With An Edge.”

The Kentucky Derby leaderboard is bound to have some big changes over the course of the next three day’s events. Multiple races will award KY Derby points nationally and abroad. 170 points are up for grabs in the next 4 races on the Road to the KY Derby. The Risen Star alone offers 85 points as the first major jump in value. A win in the Risen Star will almost definitely secure a post in the KY Derby. The big rivals have been rounded up to race in the Risen Star!

The Road to the Kentucky Derby travels through the west coast this weekend on its long trip to the bluegrass. Santa Anita’s track has seen plenty of future KY Derby winners over the past several years. Several key stakes races at Santa Anita reward KY Derby points. This weekend, Santa Anita will host its third prep race for the KY Derby and the second of three prep races for their own Santa Anita Derby, one of the most important races leading up to the KY Derby. Four of six contenders will earn KY Derby points. Who will triumph in the Robert B. Lewis Stakes?

Watching the weather closely to see if Winter Storm Harper is hype or a horror? It is a wet morning in Kentucky where it may get much cooler and transition into snow. Fortunately, while the storm is expected to affect millions across the country there is a warmer, drier place in Florida where we can view the Sunshine Millions.

The four day 2019 Keeneland January Horses Of All Ages Sale is underway and it started on the right hoof. Keeneland reported an increase in head sold with a higher gross amount and average price compared to session 1 in 2018. The sale topper was Abel Tasman. She sold for $5 million dollars! That is the top price for any broodmare prospect ever sold at a Keeneland January Sale. There were several nice offerings at the start of the Keeneland sale with some promising results.

The leaderboard is stacked full of talent and many of these thoroughbreds have proven their skill in multiple races.
