Her halter’s nameplate reads, “Come Follow Me” and her beauty made it desirable to do so. While many American’s were busy getting ready for the Super Bowl, I found the preparations at Fasig-Tipton to hold more of my personal interests. Today, Fasig-Tipton in Lexington, KY will hold the 2018 edition of their two day Kentucky Winter Mixed Sale. While visiting the barns yesterday morning, I took time to inspect a few of this sales favorites at Fasig-Tipton.
The air was cold and the ground was soggy as I walked each of the barns at Fasig-Tipton. Alternating bands of snow and rain keep moving through The Horse Capital of the World. I was fortunate to visit during a couple hours without precipitation. The auction house, which began in 1898, has had a permanent presence in Lexington since 1972.
On 2/5 and 2/6/18 Fasig-Tipton will feature their annual KY Winter Mixed Sale with 574 head catalogued, down from the 640 Thoroughbreds in the 2017 edition of this same sale. Over 1/3 of the horses offered in 2018 are short yearlings. A short yearling is a foal who just officially turned one year-old on 1/1/18. 223 short yearlings will be offered versus 186 that were catalogued in the same sale in 2017. This will be the last chance for a buyer to purchase a broodmare prior to the start of the official North American breeding season. 162 broodmares will be available to purchase versus 231 in 2017. A good variety will be available, as it is a mixed sale. Each day of the sale will start at 10 A.M. EST. Day 1 will cover the first 300 horses catalogued. Tuesday will cover hips 301 through 517 and then on to the supplemental catalogue of hips 518 through 574.
Most of the attention that precedes the sale has been focused on the two hips that include mares in foal to American Pharoah. These mares wear hip 494, Touch and Smile and hip 533, Conquestadory. They are likely to sell high.
Hip 429 has gathered a lot of attention too. She’s Overwhelming is a lovely grey mare in foal to Overanalyze. I love grey mares.
Among the latest editions to the sale, reporters are excited about hip 548, 549 and the final entry, 574. Hip 548, Lirica, who is a fine prospect for racing or a broodmare is consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency. Secret Garden, hip 549, with South Point Sales Agency is also desirable as a race horse or a broodmare. Last but far from least, 574, Denali Stud’s Girl Talk who would serve well to continue her racing career or breed some fine foals.
Personally, I was stuck by hips 114 and 467. Come Follow Me and Sunday Gravy are two of the gorgeous grey mares consigned by Taylor Made Farm. Both are lovely and Sunday Gravy has the best personality.
I hope the sale is a huge success and creates many champion graduates. I am looking forward to watching these hips mentioned in this post, go through the ring. It is almost time for the auction to begin. The snow is falling again. Best wishes to all. Please, check back soon for more posts from Thoroughbred U.
