Foal Friday

As foaling season continues in the Bluegrass I decided to take a unique farm tour.  It was very different from my regular visits to see stallions.  This week’s Thoroughbred adventure took place at Saxony Farm in Lexington, KY, where I saw foals, mares, a gelding, retired horses, Sam the barn cat and Thoroughbreds that are training for new careers.

Saxony Farm was established in 1970 by Bruce and Susan Hundley.  Today, their son, Broussard Hundley and his wife, Rosie Hundley, operate the farm.  Broussard greeted me at their training barn to begin the tour.

The farm is quite lovely.  It is spacious and yet easy to cover in an hour long walking tour.  Broussard guided me to multiple paddocks and structures telling me the history of the horses and buildings on the property.  He said the the Queen of the Turf, Tepin, got her first training there!

Saxony Farm provides a broad range of equine services.  Some horses on the property are boarded for other clients.  They provide a nice quarantine to horses shipping in and out of the country.  Saxony is a great place for hoses to rehabilitate.  The Hundley’s can prepare a horse for sale and they are skilled at breaking horses as well.  To break a horse is the term used to describe the training process of getting a horse prepared for riding.  The Hundley’s are involved in every stage of a horse’s life.  One of the first horses I saw there had just retired from racing and she was in the process of being calmed down so she could become a broodmare.  Several mares on the property were pregnant or had recently foaled.  One of the last foals I saw was just 2 days old.  His mother stayed close by.

Other stakes winners from Saxony Farm are: Ajdal, Arazi, Cuando Puede, Flys So Free, Hollywood Story, Karama, Macanal, Makeup Artist, Starrer, Wasted Tears and Zilzal.

I had a great time at Saxony Farm.  It is a very nice place to see a variety of horses.  They have dinners and weddings on the property as well.  I hope that you enjoy these pictures, click on each for an expanded view.  Have a happy Foal Friday, a fabulous weekend too and keep on reading Thoroughbred U!
