Are you ready for The World’s Richest Race?  Don’t despair.  Read on and I’ll break it down and make it real simple for you.  This is your portal to The Pegasus World Cup.

This Saturday, 1/27/18, we will be treated to the second annual Grade 1, Pegasus World Cup Invitational.  The race will be held at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale, Florida.  Gates open at 9 A.M. EST with the first race posting at 11:30 A.M EST and the Pegasus posting at 5:35 to 5:40 P.M. EST, depending on the source.  NBC will begin live coverage at 4:30 P.M. EST.  Races 6 through 12 are all stakes races.  The World’s Richest Race carries a purse of $16.3 million dollars.  12 horses will race for the money in the 12th race on a card of 12.  The winner gets $7 million dollars and the title, this is an important race.  This stakes is for Thoroughbreds age 4 and upwards.  The Pegasus is on a dirt track of 1 and 1/8 miles ( 9 furlongs).  In 2017, the first Pegasus, Arrogate won with Mike Smith as his rider and Bob Baffert training.  In 2017 the race carried a purse of just $12 million dollars.

Here are the 12 contenders by post/horse/jockey/trainer/and morning-line odds for 2018:

  1. Singing Bullet/R. Albarado/D.L. Romans/30-1
  2. West Coast/J. Castellano/B. Baffert/8-1
  3. Stellar Wind/J. Rosario/C.C Brown/30-1
  4. Sharp Azteca/I. Ortiz, Jr./J. Navarro/6-1
  5. Collected/M.E. Smith/B. Baffert/8-1
  6. Gunnevera/L. Saez/A. Sano/15-1
  7. Fear the Cowboy/T. Gaffalione/E. Loza, Jr./30-1
  8. War Story/J.L. Ortiz/J. Navarro/25-1
  9. Toast of New York/L. Dettori/J.A. Osborne/20-1
  10. Gun Runner/F. Geroux/S.M. Asmussen/4-5
  11. Seeking the Soul/J.R. Velazquez/D. Stewart/25-1
  12. Giant Expectation/G.L. Stevens/P. Eurton/30-1

Clearly, Gun Runner is the stand out favorite.  The favorite did not win in 2017.  Last year’s winning jockey, Smith,  will be on Collected, who has 2017’s winning trainer, Baffert.  Baffert also trains West Coast.  A lot is at stake in this race.  Any horse in this talent filled race could win.  I hope this quick reference, this portal to The Pegasus, helps you plan your day for The World’s Richest Race and a great moment in Thoroughbred history.  Please, enjoy the Pegasus World Cup Invitational.  As always, continue to share and read Thoroughbred U for everything Thoroughbred.
