Fame does not come fast, not even for Thoroughbreds who sweep the triple crown at the young age of three.  An induction into the Official National Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame is something one achieves many years into or even after their outstanding career in horse racing.  Friday, finally finalized the fame of a few favorites.

Justify, our 13th Triple Crown winner!
Justify, our 13th Triple Crown winner!

This week brought the disappointing news that no one wanted but many had already suspected.  Our 13th Triple Crown winner, Justify, retired from racing.  Justify achieved more than I ever would have expected but his 111 day racing career ended sooner than I anticipated.  There are several more races I would have enjoyed seeing him participate in but tragically that won’t happen now.  This got me to thinking,  what are our assumptions about a triple crown winner?  Thus, I set out to examine the triple crown trends.

Silver Charm at Old Friends in Ky
Silver Charm at Old Friends, in KY

Happy Birthday celebrations are coming up for all Thoroughbreds in North America.  On January 1st, our country’s race horses will all turn one year older, as does this blog, Thoroughbred U.  I have thoroughly enjoyed writing weekly over the past 2 years and am readily looking forward to all that 2017 has to bring.  Not to delay, the first day of 2017 brings us an opportunity to indulge in one of our very favorite sports, horse racing.  When your eating your traditional cabbage, potatoes and black-eyed peas you’ll be getting lucky.  No better way to test that new luck than a wager in the San Pasqual Stakes!

Santa Anita, now in Arcadia, California, was first constructed in 1907.  It has experienced many changes but has retained a strong and rich racing history.  In 1935 the Santa Anita Handicap was inaugurated.  This race has seen many famous contenders.  That same year, the Grade 2 San Pasqual Stakes got its start.  This stakes race has proven to be a great prep race for many fine horses.

The 2017 edition of the San Pasqual will take place on 1/1/17 at 4 P.M. live in California or at 7 P.M. in my EST zone.  Gates open at 10:30 A.M. and the 1st race is at 12:30 P.M.  The 8th race on a card of 9 is the San Pasqual.  It is a dirt race of 1 and 1/16 miles, 8.5 furlongs, for Thoroughbreds 4 years and older.  The purse is set at $200,000.  Last year, California Chrome won the San Pasqual and began a fantastic streak of many wins.

In the history of the San Pasqual, Bob Baffert is the trainer with the most wins.  He started gathering his San Pasqual successes in 1999 with Silver Charm.  I visited Silver Charm on one warm and wet day where he lives at Old Friends in Kentucky.  Baffert won again in 2002 and 2003 with Wooden Phone and Congaree respectively.  He won in 2013 with Coil and in 2015 with Hoppertunity.  This year he has hopes of winning again with the favorite, Arrogate.  Then he plans to race Arrogate against the amazing California Chrome in the first ever, Pegasus World Cup on 1/28/17 at Gulfstream Park, in Florida.

The 2017 running of the San Pasqual Stakes has a small field as follows by post position/horse/jockey/trainer/owner/and morning line odds:

  1. Prospect Park/Norberto Arroyo, Jr./Clifford w. Sise, Jr./Pam and Martin Wygod/10/1
  2. Accelerate/Tyler Baze/John W. Sadler/Hronis Racing, LLC./8/1
  3. Dalmore/Kent Desormeaux/J. Keith Desormeaux/Big Chief Racing, Head of PlainsPartners, LLC., Rocker O Ranch, LLC, et al./20/1
  4. Midnight Storm/Rafael Bejarano/Philip D’ Amato/A Venneri Racing, Inc. and Little Red Feather Racing/4/1
  5. Arrogate/Mike E. Smith/Bob Baffert/Juddmonte Farms/1/5

Prospect Park is sired by Tapit, though he is not grey himself.  His dam is Quiet Romance and he was foaled in 2012.  He has only won 3 of his 14 starts and none of those wins were made in 2016.  He has raced exclusively in CA and many times at Santa Anita.

Accelerate is the 2013 offspring of Lookin at Lucky and Issues.  He has 2 stakes races in his career, the The Los Alamitos Derby Stakes, where he won and the BC Dirt Mile where he finished 3rd.  He has finished first in 3 of his 7 races.

Dalmore has a record of 3 wins in 14 starts, just like Prospect ParkDalmore is the product of Colonel John and Silver Breeze, delivered in 2013.  He frequents the CA racing circuit and he won the Affirmed Stakes at Santa Anita on 7/2/16.

Midnight Storm was born to Pioneer of The Nile and My Tina in 2011.  He has won 9 of 20 starts and his last 5 starts were in California.  He last raced at Del Mar in the Native Diver Stakes on 11/27/16 and he won after finishing 3rd in the BC Mile earlier that month.  It find it noteworthy that Native Diver won the San Pasqual in 1966.

Arrogate was foaled to Unbridled’s Song and Bubbler in 2013.  He is a lovely grey horse.  He has won the last 5 of his 6 races, 3 of those wins were at Santa Anita.  2 of his wins were in stakes races, The Traver’s Stakes and the Breeders’ Cup Classic.  He had a work out on 12/27/16 and he was looking fine covering 6 furlongs in 1.12:20.

Happy New Year, Happy birthday and all the other happy that I wish for each of you!  May all of you have safe passage into the new year and many blessings throughout.  I’ll continue to post my Thoroughbred thoughts and experiences as we continue to grow.

Update: Arrogate scratched due to rain.

I hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas.  Mine was wonderful.  I enjoyed a lot of family time which included a trip to the Kentucky Horse Park to experience Southern Lights.  Tours will continue until December 31, 2015.

IMG_7847

Southern Lights is an annual event at the park with over 4 miles of light displays.  I like the horse themed lights the best.  Above I included pictures of Keeneland and Churchill Downs.  There are all sorts of displays including the Wizard of Oz and the 12 Days of Christmas.  Views of the lights are most accessible by driving.  Once parked they also have a craft market, gift shop, visit with Santa, train displays, a train ride, camel and pony rides, part of the museum for touring and a petting zoo.

IMG_7845IMG_7843

I really enjoyed feeding carrots to all of the animals at the zoo.  I am surprised the animals could still eat with so many people eager to feed them. The kangaroos were not eager to eat or allow themselves to be petted.  They were ready to snooze.

IMG_7842

I believe I was most excited to pet the llamas.  A camel tried to eat my brother’s hat and I took a selfie with the happy and hungry camel.

On the grounds near the visitor center the Secretariat statue had a horse light display and the Man O’ War had the Wizard of Oz scene behind it.

IMG_7840IMG_7839

I did not recognize any changes in the museum since my last visit in June but I included these pictures for your enjoyment.  John Henry, Secretariat, Affirmed, and Seattle Slew were some of the featured Thoroughbred displays.

It was odd being at the Horse Park without getting to see the horses but still a great time.  If you ever find yourself in Lexington, KY around Christmas time I would recommend visiting Southern Lights.  This is one of those stories that are better told with pictures although photographing light displays is most difficult.  I hope you enjoyed my pics and that you might see it in person some day.

For Christmas I was gifted a few new equestrian themed items too.  I got boots, some horse shoe art and a horse hair bracelet.  Feel free to comment with pictures or details about the horsey gifts you received this year.

Jockumentary John

From the dirt on the tracks to the red carpet, our super star jockeys are about to appear in a Triple Crown jockumentary.  I am one lucky girl and I was real excited that I had the accidental pleasure of meeting John Rousseau, producer, writer and director of “Heart, Hope & Glory-Masters of the Triple Crown”.

Earlier this week, I was hanging out and enjoying an evening off from work when I spotted a man in a Saratoga shirt.  I couldn’t help myself, I had to ask him when he was there last.  It was pretty recently and then he showed me his nice bridle style Seattle Slew bracelet, a gift from Jean Cruguet himself.  Wow!  I had to hear his story so I whipped out my Thoroughbred U business card and started grilling the man.  As it turns out, this man is working on an amazing film on the last 3 living Triple Crown winning jockeys, prior to this year’s big win by Victor Espinoza with American Pharoah.  Even nicer, part of the proceeds will got to fund the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund.

The movie will feature Ron Turcotte, Jean Cruguet and Steve Cauthen.  This is the first time that these famous jockeys have gathered together to tell their stories on camera.  The film is set to be released in Lexington, KY this September prior to the Keeneland September Sale.  The studio is GoldMark Media Ventures managed by GoldMark Farm owner Paul Bulmahn.  There is already a movie trailer, a Facebook page, a Twitter account and a website. Heart, Hope & Glory

The PDJF was founded in 2006.  It is a nonprofit public charity that benefits jockeys that have suffered debilitating on-track injuries.  Currently, about 60 jockeys are being helped by this fund.  Here is the link to read about the charity and/or donate to the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund

Ron Turcotte is the amazing retired jockey for many horses including the 1973 Triple Crown Winner, Secretariat. Turcotte was born in Canada in 1941.  He is featured in another documentary, “Secretariat’s Jockey, Ron Turcotte”, that had its world premier in Louisville, KY during the Kentucky Derby festivities in 2013.  That film was directed by Phil Comeau.  Turcotte was the 1st jockey to win 5 out of 6 consecutive Triple Crown races.  He was the only one to do this until just this year when Espinoza matched him.  Mr. Turcotte has been inducted into the National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame and he received the George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award.  Secretariat was born in 1970 and grabbed the Triple Crown in 1973, after a 25 year drought of no Triple Crown victories.  He was just our 9th Triple Crown champ ever.  Secretariat has an amazing fan following and he earned it, collecting wins and awards in abundance.  He is ranked 2nd on the list of top 100 U.S. Race Horses of the 20th Century.  Man O War is ranked 1st.  Secretariat made records in all legs of the Triple Crown and holds the fastest times to this day.  In his retirement, he became the Leading Broodmare Sire in North America.  He died in 1989 and was buried at Claiborne Farm in Paris, KY.

Jean Cruguet was born in France in 1939.  He won the Triple Crown in 1977 riding Seattle Slew.  Cruguet got his start in Europe but he moved to the United States in 1965 and only briefly raced in Europe again in 1972.  He has a long list of achievements and honors.  He has retired a few times since 1980 and is currently living in Kentucky.  Back in June he rode American Pharoah around the barn area at Churchill Downs.  This is probably the only time a Triple Crown winning horse has been mounted by two Triple Crown winning jockeys.  Seattle Slew was born in 1974 and he is the only horse to ever win the Triple Crown undefeated in all races of his prior career.  He went on to win the Belmont too and retired winning 14 of 17 career starts.  He was our 10th Triple Crown horse and is ranked 9th of the Top 100 U.S. Race Horses.  He had a nice stud career at Spendthrift Farm and Three Chimneys Farm and was buried at Hill N Dale Farm in 2002.  He was a Leading Sire in North America as well as a Leading North American Broodmare Sire.

Right here, in Kentucky, in 1960, Steve Cauthen was born.  He rode Affirmed in the 1978 Triple Crown sweep.  Cauthen raced in the United Kingdom for many years and has racked up big wins in not only the United States but Great Britain, France, Germany, Ireland and Italy.  He is a National Museum Racing Hall of Famer.  So was his horse Affirmed.  This Thoroughbred was inducted in 1980.  He won our 11th Triple Crown and is ranked 12th on the Top 100 Race Horses.  Affirmed later raced against Seattle Slew twice and was beat both times.  These are the only times two Triple Crown winners have competed against one another.  He was the sire to many stakes winners and champions.  Affirmed  earned many awards and titles and was buried at Jonabell Farm in 2001.

It was a pleasure to meet John Rousseau and to hear his stories and see the pictures on his phone.  I love the passion he has for Thoroughbred horse racing and his special perspective on the human athletes of the industry.  I can’t wait to see his jockumentary.  I hope this makes him very successful and raises a lot of money for the PDJF.  I think this will be a very special project to shed some light on many great racing stories of the past while the jockeys are still here to share those tales themselves.  I love racing and all the interesting characters involved.  Have a great weekend everyone and keep your eyes and ears peeled.  You never know what opportunity knocks next!  Oh, and my lovely dirt pics above are from my surprise backside invite to Churchill Downs for early morning breezing.  That’s some nice dirt!
