California Chrome is set to transcend in tomorrow’s Trans Gulf Electromechanical Trophy race!  Chrome has traveled to Dubai, United Arab Emirates for the 2nd time in his brief but exciting 5 years.  Tomorrow’s (2/25/16) prep race is a handicap race meant to give Chrome both the practice he needs and the rest time he wants prior to his second chance at bringing home the Dubai World Cup!

image(177)

The Dubai World Cup (DWC), operated by Emirates Racing Authority,  was created in 1996 by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.  He is the ruler of Dubai, the founder of Godolphin Racing and the owner of Darley.  The DWC is the end of the UAE racing season at Meydan Racecourse. The season is from 11/5/15 to 3/26/16 this time.  Prior to 2010, this race was held at Nad Al Sheba Racecourse on the same grounds.  Since the remodel, Meydan has a hotel with suites that face the racecourse, golf, a museum, dining and a theatre.  The grandstands hold 60,000 fans.  There is a dirt track and a turf track.  Prior to 2015 the Meydan dirt track was a synthetic material called Tapeta.  The DWC is the world’s richest race. The purse money on DWC day, the last Saturday of March annually, is $30 million dollars of which $10 million is the prize for just the one race!  The entire DWC Carnival has a purse of $40 million dollars.  The Carnival is mixed in with the regular season and is featured on 11 days of international racing ending with the DWC, sponsored by Emirates.  Admission to the grandstands and paddock views are free through the regular racing season.

California Chrome is the 5 year old champ of sire, Lucky Pulpit, and dam, Love the Chase.   He has had 19 career starts.  He is owned by California Chrome, LCC, which is Perry Martin and Taylor Made Farm.  He was bred by Martin and Steve Coburn.  Chrome ran second in the DWC in 2015.  Prince Bishop was the 2015 winner.  Chrome was with his regular jockey, Victor Espinoza, when he last raced in Dubai as he will again this year.  Chrome has won the 2014 Kentucky Derby, the 2014 Preakness Stakes, the 2014 Eclipse Award Horse of the Year Award and the 2014 Eclipse Award Champion 3 Year Old Colt Award.  He ran 3rd in the Breeders’ Cup Classic in 2014.  After he ran at Meydan on 3/28/15 he suffered a few injuries and some time in recovery,  He raced again on 1/9/16 and was victorious in the Santa Anita San Pasqual Stakes (G2).

image(175)

Last year Chrome did not participate in a prep race in Dubai prior to his effort in the DWC.  The most popular prep race is Super Saturday, ran at Meydan 3 weeks prior to the DWC.  Chrome will not race on Super Saturday.  Tomorrow, the feature race is The Zabeel Mile (G1).  Chrome won’t be in that race either.  Rather, his connections have chosen the same prep race used by Curlin who won the DWC in 2008.  Chrome will race the 6th race tomorrow, the Trans Gulf Electromechanical Trophy Race (TGET).  The purse is $150,000 dollars.  His owners thought that since he didn’t have a prep last year and placed 2nd they would prep him this time but they didn’t want a race that was too difficult and they wanted him to have more recovery time.  The 2016 TGET is a 1 and 1/4 mile (about 10 furlongs) dirt handicap race for horses 3 years old and upwards.  Chrome will carry the most weight, about 15 pounds more than his 7 competitors.  Chrome drew the rail in the following field:

  1. California Chrome(USA)-5YO
  2. El Tren(IRE)-5YO
  3. Good Contact(USA)-4YO
  4. Hunting Ground(USA)-6YO
  5. Pit Stop(IRE)-5YO
  6. Plantagenet(SPA)-9YO
  7. Storm Belt(USA)-7YO
  8. Success Story(KOR)-5YO

Look out for Hunting Ground whose sire, Street Cry, won the DWC in 2002!

image(174)

I have faith that Chrome can win the TGET and then he will be ready for the DWC this time!  Several Thoroughbreds with USA roots have won the DWC.  The inaugural race in 1996 was won by Cigar.  In 1998 Silver Charm won.  Captain Steve took the Cup in 2001.  Pleasantly Perfect was victorious in 2004.  Roses In May was the big winner in 2005.  Electrocutionist who won in 2006 was foaled in the USA.  2007 saw USA trained Invasor win.  Curlin grabbed the title in 2008.  Well Armed was the champ in 2009.  Finally, 2013 shared ownership with the Australian’s with Animal Kingdom.

image(173)

Let’s hope it is time for California Chrome to win some more!  Victor Espinoza wants to be the 1st jockey to win the Triple Crown and the DBC.  He is already the 1st jockey to win the Grand Slam, the Triple Crown and the Breeders’ Cup Classic.  Chrome’s owners want him the win the TGET and the DWC followed by the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita to make him the USA’s #1 Thoroughbred in all time earnings and then to stand stud at Taylor Made Farm.  I wish Chrome all the success in the world and I am looking forward to his return to Taylor Made.  I will be watching TVG at 12:55 P.M. EST on 2/25/16 to see Chrome transcend!

With just a few days/steps in time, this year is off to a fantastic start!  I had a great response to my post I wrote on New Year’s Eve and there are so many good things going on in the Thoroughbred racing industry.  I am so thrilled that today brings the return to racing for California Chrome at Santa Anita.  At this same track and this same day,  Mrs. Penny Chenery will present the Secretariat Vox Populi Award to the connections of American Pharoah.  We have had several new Thoroughbred babies born in the last week.  The January Keeneland sale starts Monday and I made it out to the barns to see some of those horses today.  Also, the finalist for the Eclipse Awards were announced on January 6th and on the 16th the winners will be announced.  Shew, there is just so much to enjoy.  Speaking of enjoyment,  I’m pretty happy to see that Tepin is up for an Eclipse Award and I hope she wins!

image(129)

The 45th annual Eclipse Awards will be presented to the winners of 17 horse and human categories including 6 media categories, Horseplayer of the Year and a lifetime achievement/award of merit winner.  The awards dinner will be held at Gulfsteam Park.  The 6 media winners have been chosen.  They are;  Jennie Rees, Mary Simon, Tim Sullivan, NBC Sports, Scott Serio and Brad and John Hennegan.  The Horseplayer of the Year Award goes to John O’Neill.  Leonard Lavin takes the Eclipse Award of Merit.  The other 17 categories are up for grabs!  Here are the nominees:

  • Horse of the Year:  American Pharoah, Runhappy, Beholder

  • Breeder: Zayat Stables, Kenneth and Sarah Ramsey, Darley

I can’ t blog on forever so I picked the Female Turf Horse category.  I am crazy about all 3 entries, heck I love all these Thoroughbreds.  I had the pleasure of watching Tepin, Stephanie’s Kitten and Found on the last day of the Breeders’ Cup this past year.   Read on to see the pictures I took and a small bio on each horse.

image(131)

Found is a lovely Irish filly.  She was born in March of 2012.  Her sire is Galileo and her dam is Red Evie, both are Irish as well.  She won 1st place in the 2015 Breeders’ Cup Turf.  This is the first time a 3 year old filly has won this race.  She has not raced since but she has had 11 career starts in which she won 4 times, placed 5 times and showed 1 time.  Found has over $2 million dollars in earnings and is ranked 9th in earnings for 2015.  Her jockey is Ryan L. Moore.  Found is trained by Aidan O’ Brien and owned by Michael B. Tabor, Mrs. John Magnier and Derrick Smith.  Her breeders were Roncon, Wynatt and Chelston.  She is up for 3 Year Old Filly too!  Last I read, she should race again in 2016.

image(130)

Stephanie’s Kitten was foaled in March of 2009.  She is the progeny of Kitten’s Joy and Unfold the RoseStephanie’s Kitten is now at Northern Farm in Japan.  She was formerly Kentucky bred and owned by Ken and Sarah Ramsey.  She won the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf in 2015.  This horse had Irad Ortiz, Jr, for her jockey and was trained by Chad C. Brown.  She was 2nd in the same BC race in 2014 and won the BC Juvenile Fillies Turf in 2011.  She ranked 8th in earnings in 2015.  She has earned over $4 million dollars.  Stephanie’s Kitten has had 25 career starts.  She won 11 times, was second 4 times and came in third 4 times.  I hope she has a happy life as a broodmare in Japan and perhaps she can someday retire back home in Kentucky.

image(132)

Tepin was also born in March but in 2011.  She is the Kentucky bred daughter of Bernstein and Life Happened. Tepin was owned by Robert E. Masterson when she won the BC Mile in 2015.  She is second in earnings for 2015.  She has gross earnings of over $2 million dollars.  During her career she has 7 wins, placed 3 times and showed once in 15 starts.  I saw her win on October 3rd this past year at Keeneland in the Grade 1, First Lady Stakes.  She has not raced since the BC win but she had a nice workout at Palm Meadows Training Center yesterday.  Julien R. Leparoux is her jockey.  Machmer Hall is Tepin’s breeder and she is  trained by Mark E. Casse.  I’m hoping she has a nice 2016 career and I’d like to see this Eclipse Award granted to her.  I thinks it is Tepin’s time!  Click the link for Disney’s Mary Poppins song, “Step In Time”.

Step In Time

I like all the choices for Female Turf Horse as well as the other award candidates.  I am looking forward to the reveal on the 16th.  I hope some of you have a great time live at Santa Anita today and I wish others will join me at the Keeneland Sales starting on 1/11/16 but already bustling in the barns, see below.  I will share with you all about the auction.  Have a great weekend!

Kisses for Chrome

image(127)

Happy New Year to all of you wonderful horse racing fans!  I hope that each of you have a safe and pleasant evening followed with good luck in all of 2016.  The New Year is a time to reflect on the past and plan for the future.  It is also a time for celebration and tradition.  I will be going to my same favorite bar and grill as I have done for 15 years now.  Many folks will exchange a kiss at the stroke of midnight.  As I think back on this year, I remember a very special kiss.  I stole a kiss from California Chrome!

image(126)

That’s right, I kissed Chrome this September.  I was advised after not to do so, by a staff member at Taylor Made Farm in KY, but I have zero regrets and I look forward to the day he retires to stud there and I might sneak another peck!  In fact I am very excited for the new year to see what the future has in store for California Chrome.

image(125)

Right after I saw Chrome twice in late September, which I covered in my story below, he shipped back to California in October and began training in November.  After healing his bruised cannon bone in Kentucky, that occurred sometime after his last race in March of 2015, he is just about ready to race again.  The plan for California Chrome appears that he will hopefully race January 9, 2016 at Santa Anita Park in the Grade 2 San Pasqual Stakes for a $200,000 purse.  He may then ship to Dubai for another chance at the $10 million dollar Dubai World Cup at Meydan Grandstand and Racecourse on March 26, 2016.

Kentucky Chromasomes

Chrome has had seven workouts on dirt since 11/14/15.   All of these workouts were at the Los Alamitos Quarter Horse track in California.  His last workout was 12/27/15 and was 7 furlongs.  He is gradually running further.  This champ is the son of Lucky Pulpit and Love the ChaseChrome was born in 2011.  He has earned over $6 million dollars in his 18 career starts.  This horse has won 9 times, placed 3 times and showed once.  California Chrome is trained by Art Sherman.  He will use his regular jockey in Santa Anita.  The jockey is Triple Crown winner, Victor Espinoza.  Victor was the jockey when Chrome won the 1st 2 legs on the Triple Crown and then disappointingly came in 4th in the final race, the Belmont Stakes.  Chrome has raced 6 times at Santa Anita in California and has won 3 times there including graded stakes wins.  Chrome placed 2nd in the Dubai World Cup last March.  I am hopeful that in 2016 we will see him excel again.  He was the Eclipse Award winner in 2014 for both Horse of the Year and Champion 3 Year Old Colt.  It would be wonderful if 2016 brought him another Eclipse Award!

The 2015 Eclipse Award finalist will be announced at Gulfstream Park Racing and Casino in Florida on January 6, 2016.  Then the National Thoroughbred Racing Association, the National Turf Writers and Broadcasters and the Daily Racing Form will together vote on the winners.  The winners will be announced at Gulfstream on 1/16/16.  Tickets can be purchased here: Eclipse Award.  The Eclipse Award, founded in 1971, is named for the successful race horse and sire from the 18th century, Eclipse.  These awards are given to both human and horse champions in the Thoroughbred racing industry.  This year there are 17 categories from which a winner will be named for each.

Happy New Year! Leave a comment on which horse you would like to smooch in 2016!  Tomorrow marks the birthday for all Thoroughbreds and for my blog, Thoroughbred U.

Jotting For Juba

Facebooktwitter

IMG_5171

Greetings racing fans!  It is good to be home but there has not been much action for me since I returned other than Thanksgiving and lots of shopping.  Yesterday, I had some down time and I started to think about what I wanted to check out and what I wanted to write about.  My favorite horse, Juba, had a race that day and that was where my mind was set.

Juba is “Twitter’s favorite race horse” and since my first “tweet” this past February he has quickly become my favorite horse too.  Twitter is one of the more popular social media networks.  It was created in the summer of 2006 and by this summer it had over 500 million users.  I joined to have an outlet to share my blog with.  I found out fast that Twitter is the best way for me to get the latest information on current events in the Thoroughbred racing industry.  I am happy to have over 200 followers on Twitter.  Juba has over 2,200 followers.  He is found on Twitter here @JubacoltJuba (the Gray), can not do his own tweets, since he is a horse, so an anonymous person handles that for him.  He has created hash tags such as #GoJubaGo for his races and #haikujuba to write poetry and inspire others to do the same.  Juba, the horse, still strikes the best poses and lights up for the cutest videos.

The real Juba is a 4 year old colt.  He is gray with a black mane.  He is so fair he looks white on photos and television.  He is the Kentucky bred son of Tapit and Adoradancer.  He grew up on Lane’s End Farm in Versailles, KY after his birth on 5/25/2011.  He was sold to Centennial Farms at Keeneland’s September Yearling Sale in 2012.  He lives at Belmont Park in New York now.  Juba has had 11 starts with 2 wins, 3 second place finishes and 3 times at 3rd.  He has raced at 4 tracks: Aqueduct, Gulfstream Park, Saratoga and Belmont.  Juba’s jockey is Jose L. Ortiz.  He is trained by Jimmy Jerkins.  Yesterday he ran at Aqueduct again.  It was a nasty day.  The track was muddy and the fog was thick.  Centennial Farm tweeted #GreyColtsBlendIntoGreyFog.  He was in the 8th race.  The 9th race was cancelled because weather conditions were so bad.  Juba finished 7th in a field of 11 horses.  He was doing well at second place early in the race.  It was an odd race to watch because the fog was so dense.  Sometimes fog can be exciting like on the top of Mount Humphreys, seen at the top, when I took that climb but in yesterday’s race it looked dangerous. It is very hard to even see.  Click watch video here Race 8 Aqueduct 12/2/15

I have never seen Juba live.  Centennial broke my heart this past October when it was decided at the last moment that he would not be racing at Keeneland shortly before the Breeders’ Cup.  That put Juba and myself in a huff.  I hope that I can pet his pretty face someday but it is a long trip from Kentucky to New York.  I called Gainesway Farm in Lexington, KY yesterday to see if I could tour, meet his sire Tapit and see 8 other stallions but they responded that they are not currently doing public tours.  Too bad, I hope they change that soon.  Tapit is gray too.  He has been the leading sire in the United States for 3 years now.  He has the highest stud fee at $300,000.  In 2015 he was bred to 135 mares.  This year 5 of his off-spring have won Grade 1 stakes races: Frosted, Tonalist, Untapable, Ring Weekend and Constitution.  He is the leading sire of G1 winners.  Juba’s dam, Adoradancer, had 19 starts at 8 tracks including Keeneland, my home track.  She raced there twice in 1997 so perhaps I have seen her.

Despite yesterday’s race I still wanted to do some jotting for Juba.  I wanted to share that even horses that don’t win every race are still ever so wonderful.  Penny Chenery, owner of the great Secretariat, is wise to stress this truth and award accordingly.  She created the Secretariat Vox Populi award in 2010.  Vox Populi is a latin term meaning the voice of the people.  The winners from the 1st year to 2014 have been: Zenyatta, Rapid Redux, Paynter, Mucho Macho Man and California Chrome, respectively.  She noted that while most awards for Thoroughbreds are based on statistics and performance measures she thought some horses should be honored for being a favorite of the public and an ambassador for the sport.  Thru an on-line poll, done by the public, votes are collected.  You can vote here now Vox Populi Award .  Voting is open until 12/6/15 then the votes are reviewed by Ms. Chenery and a panel of 8 experts.  On 1/9/16 the recipient will be announced at Santa Anita Park.  American Pharoah, Beholder and Rachel’s Valentina are the horses on the ballot but write-ins are accepted.  The horses listed are all lovely and deserving choices but Juba is “Twitter’s favorite horse” and I think that is quite a distinction in the popularity department.

Who will you vote for?  Give Juba a thought or share who means the most to you.  I will be blogging again before next week’s end and I will share the people’s choice with you in January as well.  Please, keep following and sharing.  Thank you!

It is just Monday and I started the week off right with another visit to see California Chrome at Taylor Made Farm.  I went to 2 of 3 Fan Days this weekend with the later including a farm tour, in addition to a meet and greet at the stallion complex.  Chrome was just as adorable and exciting yesterday as he was when I first met him on Friday.  Chrome is one terrific horse and it has been such a pleasure having him here in Kentucky.

image(41)

His time here is almost over, for now.  Yesterday, 9/27/15, Duncan Taylor, President of Taylor Made Farm made a similar presentation to the one I attended on Friday following my chance to meet, photograph and love on several of the resident stallions.  I was better able to pay attention this time due to the repetition of material and that I wasn’t so completely baffled by the site of Chrome.  I learned that California Chrome is expected to be fully recovered from his bruised cannon bone. Gilberto is pointing the injury out in the picture above. Chrome likely  got the injury from standing in stalls too long.  The remedy to heal such an injury is to spend 75 days turned out into pasture land.  During Chrome’s stay he packed on 160 pounds dining on Kentucky Bluegrass and he should be cleared by his veterinarian October 1st to be shipped back to California.  He will probably fly out between October 8th and 15th.  His trainer, Art Sherman, wants to race him some more before he begins his stud career at Taylor Made.  The rumor is he may race in Dubai.  I wish him well.  I hope our American Horse of the Year wins some more races and returns to Kentucky safe and sound when he retires from racing.  Duncan Taylor noted Chrome may be California bred, but he has Kentucky Chromasomes, thanks to his KY sire, Lucky Pulpit.  After I bid Chrome farewell I boarded the tour bus.

image(42)

Pulling away from the stallion complex in the bus, Alex Payne, the farm manager for the yearlings, was the tour guide.  We rode around and made a few stops to walk about the 1100 acres of the 36 year old farm.  We saw the barn American Pharoah lived in as a yearling, in the distance.  We made our 1st stop at Aaron and Maire Jones barn.  They had fields full of mares and babies.  It was nice to pet them and admire their beauty.  See some of their pretty faces below.

image(43)

Next we went to see some of the RNAs (reserve not attained) from the Keeneland September Yearling Sale that just finished this past Saturday.  See theses precious Thoroughbreds below.

image(44)

Many of these horses were still tired from their sale experience.  Some had been purchased since the sale at a RNA party the farm hosted.  Others may still be available.  There is a good chance I met some future big time winners while at the farm.  Unfortunately, at this part, I had to ditch the tour to make it to my day job.  I wish i could have stayed all day.  I had such a great time and I can not wait to go back.  Thankfully, Taylor Made is one of the farms that is part of Horse Country Breeders’ Cup Festival Week Horse Farm Tours and they plan on touring after the BC too.  Here is a link to get your own tour: Horse Country

Finally, I leave you with my other favorite animal, cats!  I met two barn cats and they were a delight.  Have a great week everyone and I have hundreds to thousands or more pictures too so leave me a comment if there is something more you want to see.  Thank you in advance!

TGIF!  I have been one busy equestrian fan since the last post.  I have never gone a week without blogging, so I am not going to miss my chance now, but it was not for lacking material this week.  Since my last post I went to live racing at Churchill Downs, attended Keeneland’s September Yearling Sales again and went to the 1st of Taylor Made Farm’s California Chrome Fan Day!

image(35)

image(36)

Churchill Downs had just one night for Downs After Dark this September meet.  I went this past Saturday, 9/19/15.  I placed some of my best bets ever just going by names that I liked,  mostly anything with a cat or kitten in its own name or pedigree.  Starship Zeus came in 1st in the 7th race, bringing me the most money.  He was sired by Bluegrass Cat.  I also found Posture, who ran for Motley Crew Stables in race 2.  He made me money with a nice win.  I chose him because I love the rock band, Motley Crue.  I enjoy night racing, the cooler summer temperatures, the sunset the lighting and the live bands make it a little extra special.

image(37)

The sale at Keeneland was a good time as usual. This September Yearling sale is rather long.  It began on September 14th and I went that day.  It concludes tomorrow, 9/26/15.  I was just there again on Wednesday, 9/23.  The crowds were a lot smaller than the first day but there were still many great Thoroughbreds for sale.  280 horses were sold Wednesday, to be exact.  I sat in the sales pavilion, rather stunned, as a buyer for Bridlewood Farm had bought hip #3056 for $300,000, while communicating as a person in the pavilion to a person on the other end of his cell phone.  In some strange miscommunication the buyer rejected his offer of 300K which put the horse back into auction right on the spot and thus the same buyer had to pay an additional 30K for the debacle as other bidders wildly sprung into action.  I must say that the auctioneer warned him.  This $330,000 bay filly by Blame and 1/2 sister to Nyquist was the top seller of the day.

image(38)

Today, I made it to Taylor Made Farm in Kentucky for California Chrome Fan Day!  I met and petted several horses including; Graydar, Old Fashioned, Eskendereya, Astrology, Northern Afleet and California ChromeChrome got a little more than a petting,  I gave him a quick smooch!  Duncan Taylor, president, did most of the talking.  I was impressed with the stories he told of hard work, a tight knit family, Christian values and a love of people and horses that he accredited to Taylor Made’s success.  I was pleased when he recited the prayer of St. Francis of Assisi.  He is the patron saint of animals and it comforted me to know that the farm’s animals here are loved by their owners.  I thought that Pope Francis would have liked to have experienced this moment if traveling to the Horse Capital of the World was part of his United States visit.  I would have be thrilled to have seen the Pope this week.  I am going back to see Chrome again this Sunday and I will give you a full Fan Day story following that.  Have a great weekend and enjoy a few Chrome photos!

Dancing With The Stars

Good morning!  It is a very busy day for this blogger.  I am up early and about to head to Keeneland for a full day of sales.  First, I wanted to make sure everyone was ready to root for Victor Espinoza off the track and onto the dance floor!

Dancing With The Stars is the name of a television series that covers different groups of dancers in competition in various versions in several countries.  In the United States, season 21 airs beginning tonight, 9/14/15.  ABC launched the American version in 2005.  Professional dancers are paired with celebrities and then ranked by a panel of judges and at home viewers to determine eliminations.  The final couple, at the season’s end, wins and is presented with The Mirror Ball Trophy.  My parents and my favorite restaurant owner love the show.  I do not watch a lot of television myself but this season of DWTS, I am going to have a big reason to tune in.  This is the first time ever, in America, that one of the celebrities is a jockey.  This extra special jockey is Victor Espinoza.  Victor has been paired with professional dancer, Karina Smirnoff.  Karina won in season 13. They are one of 13 couples who will dance this season.

Espinoza has a multitude of awards and trophies.  He has won over three thousand races.  He has the ESPY Award for Best Jockey in 2002, 2014 and 2015.  He won the Kentucky Derby, and the Preakness Stakes riding War Emblem in 2002 and California Chrome in 2014.  This year he won those two races and the Belmont stakes riding American Pharoah to win the Triple Crown.  He also was the jockey for Take Charge Brandi when she got honored with the title, American Champion Two Year Old Filly, in 2014.   Victor is 43 years old and he is quite charitable.  He donates a lot of money to City of Hope, an organization that tackles pediatric cancer.

Be sure to watch Espinoza dance live tonight at 8 P.M. EST for the two hour season premier.  There are no eliminations week one but this season Victor will need your votes so have your phone or internet handy.  Until it’s TV time I am off to the Keeneland September Sale starting at 11 A.M. EST today.  I will have photos and information to share with you following my trip.  I hope you have a great week and that you have some horse time in your schedule too!

It is hot and sticky here today in Kentucky.  There are no live races at Keeneland or Churchill Downs right now and that is certainly a bummer, but I’m using this time to reflect on the Thoroughbred scene on a more national and even international level.

Del Mar in California just got started this Thursday and attending there would certainly be a fantasy vacation for me.  Also, we got word this week that California Chrome should heal up nicely as he is moving to Taylor Made Farms in Kentucky soon.  Just hours ago, Taylor Made announced that in about 60 to 75 days they will host a Fan Day for Chrome after he rests up.  I live nearby and I am hoping I get to see Chrome.  Additionally, we are right about in the middle of the year for the 78 international stakes races, or Breeders’ Cup Challenge, that feeds winners into the corresponding 13 Grade 1 races that make up the  32nd Breeders’ Cup World Championships.

I touched on the Breeders’ Cup before in Racing Renaissance.  To refresh you, there are 13 countries that come to North America and once in Canada to compete.  The race moves annually to different tracks and some with repetition.  This is the 1st year Keeneland, in Lexington, KY, will host the event which is the richest 2 days in sport.  The purse is $26 million dollars.  The richest day is sport happens to be the Dubai World Cup Night.  The Breeders’ Cup got its start in 1984.  The BC Classic is the best race of the series.  The purse for that race alone is $5 million dollars.  The other races are the Juvenile Turf, Dirt Mile, Juvenile Fillies Turf, Longines Distaff, Juvenile Fillies, Filly and Mare Turf, Filly and Mare Sprint, Turf Sprint, Sentient Jet Juvenile, Longines Turf, Sprint and finally, the Mile.  First, contenders are elected 3 ways. They may enter based on performance in the Breeders’ Cup Challenge, or by a point system, or be chosen by an expert panel.  The point system uses Grade 1, 2 and 3 select races to give 10 points to a winner, 6 to place and 4 to show at Grade 1.  Grade 2 awards 6, 4, and 2 points respectively while Grade 3 gives 4, 2 and 1 points, in that order.  Each of the 13 BC Championship races, except for the Dirt Mile, has 14 horses entered.  The Dirt Mile has just 12.  Of these half come from the BC Challenge and points and the other half from the panel.

The “Win and You’re In” BC Challenge began gathering contenders January 10th. There were 2 races in January, 3 in April, 2 in May, 9 in June, 8 occurring this July, 15 to take place in August, 22 in September and 16 will finish up in October.  We have 21 winners already.  The two BC Classic Contenders from the Challenge are Noble Bird And Hard Aces.  The 1st of the 7 BC Challenge races, that lead to the Classic, was the Stephen Foster Handicap where Noble Bird won at Churchill on 6/13/15.  On 6/27 Victor Espinoza rode Hard Aces in the Gold Cup at Santa Anita.  Next we have the Haskell Invitational Stakes on 8/2 in Monmouth Park where American Pharoah will compete for the 1st time since his 2015 Triple Crown sweep. 8/8 will bring the Whitney Handicap in Saratoga, then the Pacific Classic will take place at Del Mar 8/22.  On 9/26 the Awesome Again Stakes will be held at Santa Anita and then The Jockey Club Gold Cup will be at Belmont Park on 10/3.

In between and all around these dates a whole lot of other races for the BC Challenge and regular Thoroughbred racing will take place too.  I am excited to try and keep up with it all.  I am looking forward to the Haskell Invitational. American Pharoah has 7 consecutive wins and Bob Baffert has won the Haskell 7 times.  I’m hoping 8 is lucky for the both of them.  I have a friend who owns Quiet Force who is racing in the Arlington Million on August 15th.  This was suppose to be California Chrome’s next race before the bruise.  I wish Quiet Force all the luck.  If he wins he will qualify for the BC Longines Turf.

If you can’t make it to the races right now, like me, keep on watching and reading!  One reader wants help identifying Willie Shoemaker’s white and black checkered silks with a yellow cap that he won at auction.  The Shoemaker Mile, named for this famed jockey, took place 6/13/15.  It is a BC Challenge race and the winner Talco may now contend in the BC Mile.  Is there anyone that can help my reader out? Please, check out the comments section.  I’ve been looking but I don’t have his answer yet.  I haven’t quit trying yet but feel free to make it easy on me.  Thank you!

Chromies Will Miss Out On Crown Again

Before American Pharoah took home the much anticipated Triple Crown in 2015, there was another California horse that tried his best to do so last year.  The 2014 Horse of the Year, California Chrome, came in 1st in both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes only to find disappointment in the Belmont Stakes, when he ran 4th place.  His loyal fans, lovingly called the California Chromies, didn’t lose faith.  California Chrome continues to race very well and he was going to run in the Royal Ascot’s Prince of Wales Stakes tomorrow, Wednesday, June 17th, 2015 until a foot bruise that showed up on Monday resulted in an abscess.  The Royal Ascot was started by the British monarchy and continues to be attended by the Royal Family annually. Queen Elizabeth II is said to be a Chromie herself.  It is a shame that now we won’t know if California Chrome has what it takes to win a royal race and he will miss this crowning moment.

California Chrome is a 4 year old chestnut colt, with white markings,  bred and born in California. He came into this world on February 18, 2011 as the foal of Lucky Pulpit, his sire and Love the Chase, his dam.  His sire, from Kentucky, placed in multiple graded stakes.  His dam came from Maryland and only had 1 win in 6 lifetime starts. Both parents had reported breathing issues. People made fun of breeders and owners Perry Martin and Steve Coburn for this breeding choice and the men turned the bullying around choosing to name themselves DAP for Dumb A## Partners and appropriately putting those initials and a donkey on their purple silks.  The white markings on a horse can be called chrome.  That gave rise to the horses name.  He ran his 1st race in April of 2013 at Hollywood Park where he placed second with Alberto Delgado as his jockey.   California Chrome had an amazing career in 2014.  He won the 1st two legs of the Triple Crown but getting stepped on, at the Belmont Stakes, he injured his heel and that may have been what cost him the race.  That did not stop him though.  He went on to run 6th in the Pennsylvania Derby, then 3rd in the Breeder’s Cup Classic, followed by a win in the Hollywood Derby.  That year he ranked 2nd in earnings and 46th in wins.  He ran with the now Triple Crown winning jockey, Victor Espinoza in most of 2014 and early 2015.  In addition to the Eclipse American Horse of the Year title he also won American Champion Three-Year-Old Male Horse.  The Kentucky Derby win was called the National Thoroughbred Racing Association’s Moment of the Year.  He also obtained the Secretariat Vox Populi Award.  This year he has ran 2nd in both the San Antonio Stakes and the prestigious Dubai World Cup.  After the missed Royal Ascot race he will return to the United States to race more and try for contention in the 2015 Breeders’ Cup.  He has a few more races to get in before 2015 wraps when he is expected to retire to stud in Kentucky.

The Royal Ascot was founded by Queen Anne in 1711.  It takes place in Ascot, at a race course of the same name, located in Berkshire, England just a few miles from Windsor Castle.  The event lasts 5 days, Tuesday (today) thru Saturday.  Over 300,000 visitors are expected to attend.  The Prince of Wales Stakes , created in 1862 for King Edward VII, is a Group 1 turf race of 1 mile and 2 furlongs.  There will be 30 races in all.  California Chrome was to be the most anticipated horse.  The overall purse for the event is 5.5 million pounds.

It is rumored that Perry Martin, being the 70% owner of California Chrome, had pushed to enter this race.  Trainers Art and Alan Sherman, a father and son team, were not fans of this choice.  California Chrome has only ran 1 turf race prior, he did win that race but also the surface is a lot choppier at Ascot.

If California Chrome had raced in England he would have used jockey William Buick.  Buick won the Prince of Wales Stakes last year riding The Fugue.  Jockey, Buick, has had major wins in 7 countries including the United States where he won the Arlington Million with Debussy in 2010.

I have been preparing for this post for over a week and it is a shame it has now taken such a different direction.  I was very excited, hoping to see California Chrome compete on an international level.  Most importantly, I pray the wound heals quickly and we can get our beloved champ home to race a little bit longer and win a few more big races.  I would love to see him run in the Breeders’ Cup in Lexington, KY this October and then have him stick around for his retirement thereafter.  This Chromie won’t give up on hope!
