Fame does not come fast, not even for Thoroughbreds who sweep the triple crown at the young age of three. An induction into the Official National Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame is something one achieves many years into or even after their outstanding career in horse racing. Wake up sleepy heads! It is well worth being an early riser today. The Dubai World Cup (DWC) card starts at 7:45 A.M. EST on Saturday, 3/25/17! California Chrome represented the United States well last year when he romped in the DWC. Will Arrogate win for America in this year’s race? Which Thoroughbred will pick up 100 points on the road to the Kentucky Derby in the UAE Derby? The “richest day in racing” carries $30 million dollars in prize money and features 9 Group 1 and 2 races. This day of racing is every bit as delightful for me as my love for the University of Kentucky Wildcats is at NCAA tournament time. In Meydan today, we have March Madness!

A dream was fulfilled yesterday when I finally got to meet American Pharoah. I was lucky enough to be present at Keeneland, this past October, when Pharoah worked his way thru the paddock and then flashed past me to win his final race. He won the first and only Grand Slam, the combination of all 3 legs of the Triple Crown and the Breeders’ Cup Classic. With that, Pharoah retired just a few miles further down the road at Ashford Stud in Versailles,KY.
Ashford Stud is the American division of Coolmore. Coolmore America acquired the Ashford farm in the 1980s. The land was developed for cattle farming around 1912 and was called Hereford Farm until the late 1970s. As the cattle were replaced by stallions some great bloodlines began to prosper here. I was very impressed from the time I traveled thru the gated entry and down the tree lined car path passing lush fields that led us to the start of the tour. Everything we saw was built with beauty and there is a lot of stone work.
Coolmore added Thunder Gulch to the roster in 1996. He still lives there today, having retired last year. He serves as a calming factor to American Pharoah in the paddock now. Thunder Gulch is the offspring of Gulch and Line of Thunder. Thunder Gulch was born in March of 1992. He won the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes in 1995. He was 3rd in the Preakness Stakes that year. He was the Eclipse Award winner for Champion 3 Year Old Colt that same year. By 2001 he was the top sire. He has produced many fine Thoroughbreds.
A farm favorite and North America’s leading sire in lifetime earnings, still standing at Ashford, is Giant’s Causeway. He shares a barn with American Pharoah but it is Giant’s Causeway’s large statue that is featured just outside of the barn door. He is accredited with producing 31 Grade 1 winners. He is the son of Storm Cat and Mariah’s Storm, born in 1997. Giant’s Causeway had a nice career as a runner but the stud life is for him. He earned the champion sire title in 2009, 2010 and 2012.
Shanghai Bobby said it was much too pretty to look inward towards the barn. He was enjoying the view of the lovely farm. His very 1st crop of yearlings are selling now and he has had some nice prices on his Keeneland September Sale grads. Shanghai Bobby won the BC Juvenile and and Eclipse Award for Champion 2 Year Old Colt both in 2012. He himself is the son of Harlan’s Holiday and Steelin’. He was foaled in 2010.
Munnings wasn’t having it either. He left the hamming to American Pharoah. Munnings is the 2006 offspring of Speightstown and La Comete. Munnings was a nice race horse and he is producing great foals. I’m A Chatterbox is one of my favorite of his progeny.
Uncle Mo is having a very significant impact on the industry right now. He is the sire of our last KY Derby winner, Nyquist. Indian Charlie and Playa Maya produced Uncle Mo in 2008. He was the winner of the 2010 BC Juvenile and subsequently the winner of the Eclipse Award for Champion 2 Year Old Colt that same year.
Declaration of War was born to War Front and Tempo West in 2009. His sire, War Front along with Tapit took the lead at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale as they have for years. Declaration of War’s first crop are currently yearlings.
Lookin At Lucky wasn’t necessarily looking at me. This 2007 son of Smart Strike and Private Feeling was a nice racehorse. Lookin at Lucky won the Preakness in 2010. In 2009 and 2010 he took the Eclipse Award for Champion Colt. Madefromlucky is one of his many graded stakes winning offspring.
The name plaques on the walls and the gravestones in the cemetery remind us of the great horses that have called Ashford Stud home. Cigar and Scat Daddy are among those memorialized. Scat Daddy died way to soon. His last crop of yearlings are making there way through this year’s sales. Hip 454 at the 2016 Keeneland September Sale was his son. He was the sale topper hammering $3 million dollars.
The property is stuffed with awards and memorabilia affiliated with the champion sires that have called Ashford home. Pictured here are just a few of the wonderful collection I saw.
The least fancy building on the tour holds the most important rooms. This is the breeding shed where every live mount at Coolmore America takes place.
I’ll conclude the tour recap with a few more photos of Ashford’s and America’s champ. American Pharoah brought an end to our 37 year quest for a Triple Crown Winner. He is our only living champion horse of just 12 Thoroughbreds to ever win the series. American Pharoah was born in 2012. He is the son of Pioneerof the Nile and Littleprincessemma. Pharoah began breeding for the 1st time this year. I can not wait to see his foals. I hope they inherit every bit of his talent. There is always a special feeling of anticipation when our California Chrome is scheduled to race! We will get another spectacular view of this champ tomorrow, 8/20/16, in TVG’s Pacific Classic.
The 26th running of the Grade 1 Pacific Classic Stakes will take place at Del Mar Racetrack in the city by the same name, in California. The inaugural race took place there in 1991. The track is 1 and 1/4th miles (10 furlongs) on dirt. Thoroughbreds age 3 and older may compete for the $1 million dollar purse. This is Del Mar’s finest race to date, I believe . They will host the Breeders’ Cup for the first time in 2017 and in my opinion, the BC Classic is one of the few races that has nearly as much proven talent. The Pacific Classic is one of the qualifying races to earn a chance at the BC Classic, “Win and You’re In.”
Many of the best horses have participated in the Pacific Classic. Cigar, Shared Belief, Game on Dude, Lava Man, Tinners Way and Beholder are a few of my favorites. Making a return this year, Beholder with her 8 competitors are just as talented and impressive as the stars of this historical race. In post position one is my number one pick, as well as the morning line favorite, California Chrome. All of the pictures in this story are of Chrome. Each were taken over a precious weekend when I visited him last year, while he rested at Taylor Made Farm in KY. He holds 2 Eclipse Awards, has won 13 of 22 races and holds a record for racing earnings. He is the solo California bred horse in the race, sired by Lucky Pulpit and his dam is Love the Chase.
Hoppertunity, bred in Kentucky, is the progeny of Any Given Saturday and Refugee. He has won 5 of 20 career starts. He was 3rd to Chrome in the 2016 Dubai World Cup. Last year he ran 4th in the Pacific Classic. Hoppertunity is a multiple graded stakes winner.
War Story, also KY bred, is the son of Northern Afleet and Belle Watling. He has placed first in 3 of 12 races. He has had a lot of experience in graded stakes races but not much success.
Another KY boy, Hard Aces is sired by Hard Spun, his dam is All in With Aces. He has won 7 times in his career of 33 starts. He is a multiple graded stakes winner. He was 6th place in the Pacific Classic in 2015. He won his last race/stakes out at Del Mar late July. Perhaps he is on an upswing in California?
The son of Pulpit and Teamgeist is the lovely grey, Win the Space. This horse was bred in KY by Spendthrift Farm. He has won 3 in 12 races. He has not won a graded stakes race.
Imperative is the KY bred offspring of Bernardini and Call Her. He has raced 32 times and has 3 wins. He has not won since 2014 but it was a graded stakes race. He finished 5th in the Pacific Classic in 2015.
Beholder has won an amazing 17 of her 23 races, yet I have never beheld her live myself. She holds 3 Eclipse Awards and finished 1st in the BC Juvenile Fillies, 2012 and BC Distaff, 2013. She is the only filly in the race. Beholder holds a high rank in earnings. She won the Pacific Classic last year. She is the second choice to win per the odds as I write this. Beholder is the KY bred daughter of Henny Hughes and Leslie’s Lady.
In his last race out, Dortmund ran a close 2nd to Chrome in the San Diego Handicap this past July. Dortmund is the KY bred son of Big Brown and Our Josephina. He has won an impressive 8 of 11 races. Dortmund was 3rd in the KY Derby and 4th in the Preakness both up against American Pharoah in 2015. With plenty of talent and California racing experience this guy brings strong competition and is 3rd for the favorite. He shares his trainer, Baffert, with Hoppertunity.
Finally, the last post position is the baby of the bunch, Dalmore. He has 3 wins in his 11 starts. He is the only Florida bred horse in the race. He is the son of Colonel John and Silver Breeze. He won in his last race/graded stakes. He was 5th this year in the California Chrome Stakes.

Chromies, we have been waiting for this! This Saturday we are hoping to seek our redemption when California Chrome goes after the Dubai World Cup (DWC) once again. Chrome took a nice long break after he participated in the DWC on 3/28/15. He lost to Prince Bishop that day. Losing is not something Chrome is accustomed to. His cup runneth over with success. He is a true champ. When he was healed and rested he came back on 1/9/16 to win the Santa Anita San Pasqual Stakes in California, USA and then he won the Trans Gulf Electromechanical Trophy race at Meydan Racecourse in Dubai, UAE on 2/25/16. Chrome is ready!
I wrote about the history of the DWC and California Chrome when I did my story about his last race in Dubai here: Chrome Shall Transcend. A brief recap suggests Chrome is set to fill the horseshoes of many great horses that have come before him. The DWC began in 1996 and was won by Cigar that year. It is the “richest day of racing” with a purse of $30 million dollars for nine Group 1 and 2 races at Meydan. $10 million of that is for just the DWC itself. The DWC, sponsored by Emirates Airline, is about 10 furlongs (2,000 meters or about 1 and 1/4 miles) on the dirt. The contenders are world wide Thoroughbreds aged 4 or older if from the Northern Hemisphere or 3 years and up from the Southern Hemisphere. The U.S. leads in previous winners with 9 U.S. owned champions. UAE, France, Japan, Hong Kong and Great Britain also have entries this year. 12 horses will compete represented by California Chrome, Frosted, Hoppertunity, Keen Ice and Mshawish from the United States. The DWC falls on the last Saturday of March annually and this year it will be on 3/26/16 at 1 P.M. EST.

In addition to the 5 horses in the DWC there will be 6 more U.S. horses participating at Meydan the same day. If you are rooting for team USA then look out for a total of 11 U.S. Thoroughbreds this Saturday including by name and race: Lady Shipman (Al Quoz Sprint) , Marking (Godolphin Mile), Flamboyant (Dubai Turf), Frank Conversion (UAE Derby), Confrontation and X Y Jet (both in the Dubai Golden Shaheen). California Chrome is set to transcend in tomorrow’s Trans Gulf Electromechanical Trophy race! Chrome has traveled to Dubai, United Arab Emirates for the 2nd time in his brief but exciting 5 years. Tomorrow’s (2/25/16) prep race is a handicap race meant to give Chrome both the practice he needs and the rest time he wants prior to his second chance at bringing home the Dubai World Cup!
The Dubai World Cup (DWC), operated by Emirates Racing Authority, was created in 1996 by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. He is the ruler of Dubai, the founder of Godolphin Racing and the owner of Darley. The DWC is the end of the UAE racing season at Meydan Racecourse. The season is from 11/5/15 to 3/26/16 this time. Prior to 2010, this race was held at Nad Al Sheba Racecourse on the same grounds. Since the remodel, Meydan has a hotel with suites that face the racecourse, golf, a museum, dining and a theatre. The grandstands hold 60,000 fans. There is a dirt track and a turf track. Prior to 2015 the Meydan dirt track was a synthetic material called Tapeta. The DWC is the world’s richest race. The purse money on DWC day, the last Saturday of March annually, is $30 million dollars of which $10 million is the prize for just the one race! The entire DWC Carnival has a purse of $40 million dollars. The Carnival is mixed in with the regular season and is featured on 11 days of international racing ending with the DWC, sponsored by Emirates. Admission to the grandstands and paddock views are free through the regular racing season.
California Chrome is the 5 year old champ of sire, Lucky Pulpit, and dam, Love the Chase. He has had 19 career starts. He is owned by California Chrome, LCC, which is Perry Martin and Taylor Made Farm. He was bred by Martin and Steve Coburn. Chrome ran second in the DWC in 2015. Prince Bishop was the 2015 winner. Chrome was with his regular jockey, Victor Espinoza, when he last raced in Dubai as he will again this year. Chrome has won the 2014 Kentucky Derby, the 2014 Preakness Stakes, the 2014 Eclipse Award Horse of the Year Award and the 2014 Eclipse Award Champion 3 Year Old Colt Award. He ran 3rd in the Breeders’ Cup Classic in 2014. After he ran at Meydan on 3/28/15 he suffered a few injuries and some time in recovery, He raced again on 1/9/16 and was victorious in the Santa Anita San Pasqual Stakes (G2).
Last year Chrome did not participate in a prep race in Dubai prior to his effort in the DWC. The most popular prep race is Super Saturday, ran at Meydan 3 weeks prior to the DWC. Chrome will not race on Super Saturday. Tomorrow, the feature race is The Zabeel Mile (G1). Chrome won’t be in that race either. Rather, his connections have chosen the same prep race used by Curlin who won the DWC in 2008. Chrome will race the 6th race tomorrow, the Trans Gulf Electromechanical Trophy Race (TGET). The purse is $150,000 dollars. His owners thought that since he didn’t have a prep last year and placed 2nd they would prep him this time but they didn’t want a race that was too difficult and they wanted him to have more recovery time. The 2016 TGET is a 1 and 1/4 mile (about 10 furlongs) dirt handicap race for horses 3 years old and upwards. Chrome will carry the most weight, about 15 pounds more than his 7 competitors. Look out for Hunting Ground whose sire, Street Cry, won the DWC in 2002!
I have faith that Chrome can win the TGET and then he will be ready for the DWC this time! Several Thoroughbreds with USA roots have won the DWC. The inaugural race in 1996 was won by Cigar. In 1998 Silver Charm won. Captain Steve took the Cup in 2001. Pleasantly Perfect was victorious in 2004. Roses In May was the big winner in 2005. Electrocutionist who won in 2006 was foaled in the USA. 2007 saw USA trained Invasor win. Curlin grabbed the title in 2008. Well Armed was the champ in 2009. Finally, 2013 shared ownership with the Australian’s with Animal Kingdom.
Let’s hope it is time for California Chrome to win some more! Victor Espinoza wants to be the 1st jockey to win the Triple Crown and the DBC. He is already the 1st jockey to win the Grand Slam, the Triple Crown and the Breeders’ Cup Classic. Chrome’s owners want him the win the TGET and the DWC followed by the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita to make him the USA’s #1 Thoroughbred in all time earnings and then to stand stud at Taylor Made Farm. I wish Chrome all the success in the world and I am looking forward to his return to Taylor Made. I will be watching TVG at 12:55 P.M. EST on 2/25/16 to see Chrome transcend!

A week ago tonight, on 10/27/15, among all the preparation and anticipation for this year’s Breeders’ Cup, a gathering of people assembled at the grave of Cigar to honor him with a new memorial statue. Gone but not forgotten, Cigar won the Breeders’ Cup Classic in 1995. This Sunday I paid my respects to his grave site once again.
Being the lucky Lexingtonian that I am, I have had the treat of making multiple trips to the Kentucky Horse Park, in Lexington, KY, over the course of my life. I have had the pleasure of meeting Cigar as well. He lived at the Horse Park from 1999 until his death October 7, 2014. I saw his grave at the KY Horse Park Memorial Walk of Champions this past July. Last week, Kentucky artist and former horse trainer, Douwe Blumberg, revealed his statue depicting Cigar’s Breeders’ Cup race. Cigar’s trainer, Bill Mott, and his jockey, Jerry Bailey attended the unveiling of the new statue. Many kind words were spoken and memories shared at the presentation. Cigar is remembered as charismatic and an ambassador with spirit and determination.
History remembers Cigar as the Thoroughbred who won 16 straight races in a row. Only Citation and Zenyatta have done as well. He was sired by Palace Music and his dam was Solar Slew by Seattle Slew, 1977 Triple Crown winner. He was a late bloomer. He didn’t race at all until he was 3 years old and he didn’t stop racing until he was 6. Cigar was born April 18th in 1990 in Maryland and owned by Allen Paulson. By 1995 he won the BC Classic going 1 and 1/4 miles in 1:59.58, a record. He went on to be Horse of the Year and American Champion Older Male Horse each in 1995 and again in 1996. He also won the internationally famed Dubai World Cup. He retired as the leading Thoroughbred in earnings at over $9 million dollars. Cigar is the American Horse of the Decade for the 1990s. In 2002 he was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame. Blood-Horse ranked him 18th in the U.S. Thoroughbred Champions of the 20th Century. There is a life sized statue of Cigar at Gulfstream Park in Florida where he won the Donn Handicap. The Cigar Mile at Aquaduct Race Track in New York is named for him.
When he retired to stud he went to Coolmore’s Ashford Stud in Kentucky. This is the same place American Pharoah moved to yesterday. Unfortunately, Cigar proved to be sterile. He retired again to the KY Horse Park Hall of Champions where he lived out his days. He developed osteoarthritis and at 24 he needed surgery. Following surgery he died in recovery from a vertebral fracture. At the KY Horse Park he is buried near Alysheba, Forego, Bold Forbes, Kona Gold and John Henry.
Near his grave healthy and happy lives go on for the other champion Thoroughbreds, barn cats and visitors but no one can forget our great, Cigar. As his statue and stone state, Cigar is incomparable, unconquerable, invincible and unbeatable.
