Today, we welcome the world back to my old Kentucky home! Once again, Churchill Downs in Louisville, KY welcomes visitors and viewers from all corners of the earth. This racetrack continues to take the international spotlight for grand Thoroughbred racing! Churchill Downs is known for delivering the “Greatest Two Minutes In Sports” for over 144 years and is now hosting it’s ninth of 35 Breeders’ Cup Events. The Breeders’ Cup is serving up 2 days of 14 World Championship races with $30 million in purse money. I just could not help but attend Dawn at the Downs to see the last morning workout before Breeders’ Cup 2018 (BC18) begins!
What a long strange trip it’s been, this Road to the Kentucky Derby. Thinking back to last September, how many times have we changed our minds, or might there be a few who had an inkling from foaling season? I’ve had an fascinating but indecisive path myself however, I have finally come to some determinations. This is what I know about the 144th running of the Kentucky Derby and I would love to share it with you.
Chef Horseradish knows how to make you the hostess with the mostest for your Kentucky Derby bash! He’s whipped up a tasty desert that is quite similar to the pie associated with the Kentucky Derby. Horseradish has a recipe with 8 simple ingredients that can be put together and baked in under an hour. No matter where you watch the KY Derby, everyone wins with this pie. Let’s see how he does it.
Bake the pie and…
Churchill’s Big Race Pie
ingredients:
1/2 cup melted butter
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup flour
2 slightly beaten eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3/4 cup chopped walnuts
3/4 cup semi sweet chocolate chips
9 inch frozen pie crust
Mix in order given. Pour into unbaked pie shell. Cover edges of crust with foil. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Remove foil and bake 10 more minutes. Cool before serving.
I wish everyone of you a great Kentucky Derby day and I hope you might enjoy some of this pie. Please, check back soon for more posts on The Kentucky Oaks and the Kentucky Derby.
Happy New Year! Be careful with your celebrations tonight because there is a whole lot to look forward to in the fresh new year. Racing fans, get ready to be thrilled by the brand new 3 year-olds! When the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Eve, all of the Northern Hemisphere Thoroughbreds celebrate the same birthday, each aging 1 year. These upcoming 3 year-olds are full of budding talent and well on their way down “The Road to the Kentucky Derby.”
I won’t be home for the holiday as I will be laboring on Labor Day. Despite that, there is hope for the holiday, the Hopeful Stakes to be exact. As Saratoga winds down, the nation’s 2 year-old Thoroughbreds are racing forward.
