Woo hoo for the Whitney!  The 87th running of the Whitney Handicap will take place tomorrow, August 6,2016 at Saratoga in Saratoga Springs, NY.  If I could click my heels and go anywhere right now, I’d be at “The Spa”.

The Whitney Handicap was inaugurated in 1928.  It has been at various tracks for different genders, ages and distances historically.  Tomorrow, the Whitney will take place on Saratoga’s dirt track.  It will be a race of 9 furlongs (1 and 1/8 mile) for horses 3 years old and upwards.  6 Thoroughbreds will compete for the “Win and You’re In” automatic entry into the Breeders’ Cup Classic and the $1.25 million dollar purse.  The winner will also receive a blanket made of Marylou Whitney pink roses and a sterling silver chalice trophy with the Whitney family crest.

Considered one of the top Grade 1 races, the Whitney is named for the Whitney family.  Historically this family’s contributions to Thoroughbred racing have shaped the industry and blessed us with a vast number of graded stakes winners.  Marylou Whitney continues the tradition.  She has a home in Saratoga as well as a farm in my hometown, Lexington, KY.  The Whitney’s have won their own stakes race 4 times.

Last year’s Whitney winner was Honor CodeKelso and Discovery each won the race 3 times.

The 2016 Whitney field is as follows by post/horse/jockey/trainer/owner/age:

  1. El Kabeir/Ricardo Santana, Jr./John P. Terranova/Zayat Stables, LCC./4
  2. Comfort/John R, Velazquez/Todd A. Pletcher/Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners/4
  3. Upstart/Irad Ortiz Jr./Richard A. Violette, Jr./Ralph M. Evans and WinStar/4
  4. Frosted/Joel Rosario/Kiaran P. McLaughlin/Godolphin Racing, LCC./4
  5. Noble Bird/Julien R. Leparoux/Mark E. Casse/John C. Oxley/5
  6. Effinex/Mike E. Smith/James A. Jerkens/Tri-Bone Stables/5

El Kabeir is a beautiful grey colt by Scat Daddy and Great Venue El Kabeir ran his first 2 of 15 career starts at Saratoga. He is a multiple graded stakes winner though he has not won in 2016.

Comfort is a colt by Indian Charlie and Unkatzable Comfort has only raced 7 times and never at Saratoga nor has he won a graded stakes.  His jockey/trainer combo won the Whitney in 2013 with Cross Traffic.

Upstart is the son of Flatter, whom I wrote about in my last story when I met him while touring the stallions at Claiborne Farm.  Upstart’s dam is Party SilksUpstart won his maiden at Saratoga on his first start.  He has raced at that track 3 times of his 14 career races.  He is a multiple graded stakes winner.  He was fourth in last year’s Travers.

Frosted is the favorite for the Whitney.  He is another lovely grey colt.  He is the offspring of Tapit and Fast Cookie.  He raced at Saratoga in 3 of his 16 starts. He placed 2nd the 1st two times at that track and third the last time out there.  Those races were a maiden, the Jim Dandy and the Travers respectively.  He is coming off a strong win at Belmont in June.  In 2015 he finished the Belmont 2nd to our Grand Slam winner, American PharoahFrosted’s trainer, McLaughlin, won the Whitney with Invasor in 2006.

Noble Bird is the gorgeous horse in the photo.  I met him at Keeneland this past April.  I caught him with his tongue out as he ate a peppermint.  He is the son of Birdstone and AnyhowNoble Bird is trained by Casse, whom works with one of my favorite fillies, Tepin!  She is a Saratoga sales grad.  Noble Bird has raced at Saratoga once before in his 16 starts.  He is a multiple graded stakes winner.

Effinex is the son of Mineshaft and What A PearEffinex has the most experience with 24 career starts.  He has raced twice at Saratoga, where he finished 2nd in the Woodward Stakes.  He is a multiple graded stakes winner.  He was second to American Pharoah in last years BC Classic. His jockey, Smith, won the Whitney in 1993 with Brunswick.  The father of James A. Jerkens, the trainer of Effinex, trained Onion who beat the amazing Secretariat in 1973’s Whitney.

As if the Whitney isn’t enough action, there are 11 races on the card Saturday.  5 of those are stakes races and there is another stakes on Sunday.  Then the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Selected Yearling Sale takes place August 8th and 9th while my most favorite horse, Juba, races at Saratoga on the 8th as well.

I part own 5 horses that will be auctioned off at the sale.  3 will go on Monday and the 4th and 5th on Tuesday.  This sale is one of the first of the season and finest of sales for yearlings.  252 select yearlings have been catalogued for the 96th Saratoga Sale.

Juba is trained by Jerkens, just like Effinex and has the same jockey, Velazquez ,as Comfort.  Juba is a 5 year-old grey son of Tapit and Adoradancer.  That is the same sire that Frosted has.

If you are at Saratoga tell me all about it.  If you’re watching from a television or computer tune in to NBC Sports for race 10, the Whitney, at 6:18 pm EST on 8/6/16.  Find Juba, in race 8 at 5:02 pm EST on 8/8/16.  I’m hoping to see it on TVG.  Finally, follow along with the Fasig-Tipton sale on http://www.fasigtipton.com

California Chrome is set to transcend in tomorrow’s Trans Gulf Electromechanical Trophy race!  Chrome has traveled to Dubai, United Arab Emirates for the 2nd time in his brief but exciting 5 years.  Tomorrow’s (2/25/16) prep race is a handicap race meant to give Chrome both the practice he needs and the rest time he wants prior to his second chance at bringing home the Dubai World Cup!

The Dubai World Cup (DWC), operated by Emirates Racing Authority,  was created in 1996 by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.  He is the ruler of Dubai, the founder of Godolphin Racing and the owner of Darley.  The DWC is the end of the UAE racing season at Meydan Racecourse. The season is from 11/5/15 to 3/26/16 this time.  Prior to 2010, this race was held at Nad Al Sheba Racecourse on the same grounds.  Since the remodel, Meydan has a hotel with suites that face the racecourse, golf, a museum, dining and a theatre.  The grandstands hold 60,000 fans.  There is a dirt track and a turf track.  Prior to 2015 the Meydan dirt track was a synthetic material called Tapeta.  The DWC is the world’s richest race. The purse money on DWC day, the last Saturday of March annually, is $30 million dollars of which $10 million is the prize for just the one race!  The entire DWC Carnival has a purse of $40 million dollars.  The Carnival is mixed in with the regular season and is featured on 11 days of international racing ending with the DWC, sponsored by Emirates.  Admission to the grandstands and paddock views are free through the regular racing season.

California Chrome is the 5 year old champ of sire, Lucky Pulpit, and dam, Love the Chase.   He has had 19 career starts.  He is owned by California Chrome, LCC, which is Perry Martin and Taylor Made Farm.  He was bred by Martin and Steve Coburn.  Chrome ran second in the DWC in 2015.  Prince Bishop was the 2015 winner.  Chrome was with his regular jockey, Victor Espinoza, when he last raced in Dubai as he will again this year.  Chrome has won the 2014 Kentucky Derby, the 2014 Preakness Stakes, the 2014 Eclipse Award Horse of the Year Award and the 2014 Eclipse Award Champion 3 Year Old Colt Award.  He ran 3rd in the Breeders’ Cup Classic in 2014.  After he ran at Meydan on 3/28/15 he suffered a few injuries and some time in recovery,  He raced again on 1/9/16 and was victorious in the Santa Anita San Pasqual Stakes (G2).

image(175)

Last year Chrome did not participate in a prep race in Dubai prior to his effort in the DWC.  The most popular prep race is Super Saturday, ran at Meydan 3 weeks prior to the DWC.  Chrome will not race on Super Saturday.  Tomorrow, the feature race is The Zabeel Mile (G1).  Chrome won’t be in that race either.  Rather, his connections have chosen the same prep race used by Curlin who won the DWC in 2008.  Chrome will race the 6th race tomorrow, the Trans Gulf Electromechanical Trophy Race (TGET).  The purse is $150,000 dollars.  His owners thought that since he didn’t have a prep last year and placed 2nd they would prep him this time but they didn’t want a race that was too difficult and they wanted him to have more recovery time.  The 2016 TGET is a 1 and 1/4 mile (about 10 furlongs) dirt handicap race for horses 3 years old and upwards.  Chrome will carry the most weight, about 15 pounds more than his 7 competitors.  Chrome drew the rail in the following field:

  1. California Chrome(USA)-5YO
  2. El Tren(IRE)-5YO
  3. Good Contact(USA)-4YO
  4. Hunting Ground(USA)-6YO
  5. Pit Stop(IRE)-5YO
  6. Plantagenet(SPA)-9YO
  7. Storm Belt(USA)-7YO
  8. Success Story(KOR)-5YO

Look out for Hunting Ground whose sire, Street Cry, won the DWC in 2002!

image(174)

I have faith that Chrome can win the TGET and then he will be ready for the DWC this time!  Several Thoroughbreds with USA roots have won the DWC.  The inaugural race in 1996 was won by Cigar.  In 1998 Silver Charm won.  Captain Steve took the Cup in 2001.  Pleasantly Perfect was victorious in 2004.  Roses In May was the big winner in 2005.  Electrocutionist who won in 2006 was foaled in the USA.  2007 saw USA trained Invasor win.  Curlin grabbed the title in 2008.  Well Armed was the champ in 2009.  Finally, 2013 shared ownership with the Australian’s with Animal Kingdom.

image(173)

Let’s hope it is time for California Chrome to win some more!  Victor Espinoza wants to be the 1st jockey to win the Triple Crown and the DBC.  He is already the 1st jockey to win the Grand Slam, the Triple Crown and the Breeders’ Cup Classic.  Chrome’s owners want him the win the TGET and the DWC followed by the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita to make him the USA’s #1 Thoroughbred in all time earnings and then to stand stud at Taylor Made Farm.  I wish Chrome all the success in the world and I am looking forward to his return to Taylor Made.  I will be watching TVG at 12:55 P.M. EST on 2/25/16 to see Chrome transcend!

I hope that everyone is having an excellent weekend.  I will be working today so no live racing for me but that won’t keep me from day dreaming about it.  There are plenty of great races today including the Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Stakes!

Keeneland will feature the QEII today, 10/10/15.  This race was inaugurated in 1984 when the British monarch, Queen Elizabeth II , visited Keeneland in Lexington, KY for the stakes race.  Crown Queen won the race last year.  It is an invitational turf race for 3 year old fillies of 9 furlongs (1 and 1/8 miles).  The Grade 1 purse is worth $500,000.

Mt tipster suggests that for race 9 at Keeneland bet on #9, Sentiero Italia.  He says, “The Queen Elizabeth II, on Saturday, has several nice 3 year old fillies.  Kiaran McLaughlin (trainer) is extremely high on (the) daughter of Medaglia D’Oro and he should be.  She (Sentiero Italia) has 4 wins from 6 starts and has earned $621,000 including 2 recent grade 2 routes at this same 9 furlong distance.  McLaughlin hopes to stay red hot as he has won 3 of his 4 starts at Keeneland this meet.”

Medaglia D’ Oro is a multiple graded stakes winner and a great sire with a 2nd place finish in the 2002 Belmont Stakes and 2nd place in both the 2002 and 2003 Breeders’ Cup Classic.

Kiaran Mclaughlin is a Lexington, KY native who has won at Keeneland this meet with Robillard on October 7th, Farz on October 4th and Pin Up on October 2nd.  He has had a lot of international success in his over 6 thousand starts.  McLaughlin has been the trainer for multiple graded stakes wins including the Belmont Stakes in 2006 with Jazil and the Breeders’ Cup Classic in 2006 with Invasor.  He won the QEII in 2008 with Alwajeeha.

Joel Rosario will be the jockey for Kentucky bred Sentiero Italia owned by Godolphin Racing LCC.  Rosario won the QEII race with Harmonious in 2010.  Godolphin has yet to win the QEII.  Rosario will enter the gate at 5:30 PM EST.

Have a great time at the track and tell me something about the experience in a comment.  Thank you, fellow race fans!

Update:  Senteriro Italia showed in third place.
