American Pharoah

A dream was fulfilled yesterday when I finally got to meet American Pharoah.  I was lucky enough to be present at Keeneland, this past October, when Pharoah worked his way thru the paddock and then flashed past me to win his final race.  He won the first and only Grand Slam, the combination of all 3 legs of the Triple Crown and the Breeders’ Cup Classic.  With that, Pharoah retired just a few miles further down the road at Ashford Stud in Versailles,KY.

Ashford StudAshford Stud

Ashford Stud is the American division of Coolmore.  Coolmore America acquired the Ashford farm in the 1980s.  The land was developed for cattle farming around 1912 and was called Hereford Farm until the late 1970s.  As the cattle were replaced by stallions some great bloodlines began to prosper here. I was very impressed from the time I traveled thru the gated entry and down the tree lined car path passing lush fields that led us to the start of the tour.  Everything we saw was built with beauty and there is a lot of stone work.

Thunder Gulch

Coolmore added Thunder Gulch to the roster in 1996.  He still lives there today, having retired last year.  He serves as a calming factor to American Pharoah in the paddock now.  Thunder Gulch is the offspring of Gulch and Line of ThunderThunder Gulch was born in March of 1992.  He won the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes in 1995.  He was 3rd in the Preakness Stakes that year.  He was the Eclipse Award winner for Champion 3 Year Old Colt that same year.  By 2001 he was the top sire.  He has produced many fine Thoroughbreds.

Giant's CausewayGiant's Causeway

A farm favorite and North America’s leading sire in lifetime earnings, still standing at Ashford, is Giant’s Causeway.  He shares a barn with American Pharoah but it is Giant’s Causeway’s large statue that is featured just outside of the barn door.  He is accredited with producing 31 Grade 1 winners.  He is the son of Storm Cat and Mariah’s Storm, born in 1997.  Giant’s Causeway had a nice career as a runner but the stud life is for him.  He earned the champion sire title in 2009, 2010 and 2012.

Shanghai BobbyMunnings

Shanghai Bobby said it was much too pretty to look inward towards the barn.  He was enjoying the view of the lovely farm.  His very 1st crop of yearlings are selling now and he has had some nice prices on his Keeneland September Sale grads.  Shanghai Bobby won the BC Juvenile and and Eclipse Award for Champion 2 Year Old Colt both in 2012.  He himself is the son of Harlan’s Holiday and Steelin’.  He was foaled in 2010.

Munnings wasn’t having it either.  He left the hamming to American PharoahMunnings is the 2006 offspring of Speightstown and La CometeMunnings was a nice race horse and he is producing great foals.  I’m A Chatterbox is one of my favorite of his progeny.

Uncle Mo

Uncle Mo is having a very significant impact on the industry right now.  He is the sire of our last KY Derby winner, Nyquist Indian Charlie and Playa Maya produced Uncle Mo in 2008.  He was the winner of the 2010 BC Juvenile and subsequently the winner of the Eclipse Award for Champion 2 Year Old Colt that same year.

Declaration of WarLookin at Lucky

Declaration of War was born to War Front and Tempo West in 2009.  His sire, War Front along with Tapit took the lead at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale as they have for years.  Declaration of War’s first crop are currently yearlings.

Lookin At Lucky wasn’t necessarily looking at me.  This 2007 son of Smart Strike and Private Feeling was a nice racehorse.  Lookin at Lucky won the Preakness in 2010.  In 2009 and 2010 he took the Eclipse Award for Champion Colt.  Madefromlucky is one of his many graded stakes winning offspring.

Ashford Stud CemeteryAshford Stud Name Plates

The name plaques on the walls and the gravestones in the cemetery remind us of the great horses that have called Ashford Stud home.  Cigar and Scat Daddy are among those memorialized.  Scat Daddy died way to soon.  His last crop of yearlings are making there way through this year’s sales.  Hip 454 at the 2016 Keeneland September Sale was his son.  He was the sale topper hammering $3 million dollars.

Ashford Stud trophiesAshford Stud mementos

The property is stuffed with awards and memorabilia affiliated with the champion sires that have called Ashford home. Pictured here are just a few of the wonderful collection I saw.

Ashford Stud Breeding Shed

The least fancy building on the tour holds the most important rooms.  This is the breeding shed where every live mount at Coolmore America takes place.

American Pharoah

I’ll conclude the tour recap with a few more photos of Ashford’s and America’s champ.  American Pharoah brought an end to our 37 year quest for a Triple Crown Winner.  He is our only living champion horse of just 12 Thoroughbreds to ever win the series.  American Pharoah was born in 2012.  He is the son of Pioneerof the Nile and Littleprincessemma. Pharoah began breeding for the 1st time this year.  I can not wait to see his foals.  I hope they inherit every bit of his talent.  He has put on a little weight and he seemed calm and comfortable for a stallion.  To arrange for your own tour go to Horse Country Tours

Get into the game!  Do you want to buy or see the graded stakes winners of the future?  If so, plan to head to Keeneland’s September Yearling Sale in Lexington, KY.  Keeneland prides itself on being the auction company to graduate the best yearlings in the world.

image297

These are a few of the pictures I took at the sale last September.  Thoroughbreds sold at Keeneland are having a fantastic year.  In 2016, more of their grads have gone on to win Grade or Group 1 stakes races than from any other auction house.  Every winner, of each of the 2016 Triple Crown Series, was once sold at Keeneland’s yearling sale in September of 2014.  Nyquist won the Kentucky Derby, Exaggerator won the Preakness Stakes and Creator won the Belmont Stakes.  It would take too long to name drop all of the talent that came out of that sale.  The 73rd annual sale should lead to greatness as well.

image296

The sale starts with Book 1 on Monday, 9/12/16, at 11 am EST.  All of Book 1 sale dates start at 11 am.  There are 6 books in the sale that concludes on Sunday, 9/25/16.  Books 2 thru 6 sales start at 10 am daily with the exception of Thursday 9/15 when there will be no sale.  The schedule is as follows by book, dates and hip numbers:

  1. 9/12 hips 1-202, 9/13 hips 203-405, 9/14 hips 406-607
  2. 9/16 hips 608-1007, 9/17 hips 1008-1407
  3. 9/18 hips 1408-1817, 9/19 hips 1818-2227
  4. 9/20 hips 2228-2637, 9/21 hips 2638-3047
  5. 9/22 hips 3048-3456, 9/23 hips 3457-3861
  6. 9/24 hips 3862-4178, 9/25 hips 4179-4479

The sale will include the best sire power.  53 Tapit yearlings will go thru the auction.  Pioneer of the Nile is represented by 60 of the yearlings there.  Fine yearlings by Scat Daddy, Bodemeister, Tiznow and Violence will be available as well.  Several more yearlings by other outstanding sires are also cataloged.  Search the entire catalog here: Keeneland September Yearling Sale

If you can’t make the sale you can go to the Keeneland website to watch the entire sale or TVG and TVG2 will show parts of the sale.  I will be in attendance on several days and I will post frequent pictures and news to Twitter.  Follow me at Thoroughbred U .  Check my webpage over the next few weeks to see more photos and sales recap information.

Waiting on the Whitney

Woo hoo for the Whitney!  The 87th running of the Whitney Handicap will take place tomorrow, August 6,2016 at Saratoga in Saratoga Springs, NY.  If I could click my heels and go anywhere right now, I’d be at “The Spa”.

The Whitney Handicap was inaugurated in 1928.  It has been at various tracks for different genders, ages and distances historically.  Tomorrow, the Whitney will take place on Saratoga’s dirt track.  It will be a race of 9 furlongs (1 and 1/8 mile) for horses 3 years old and upwards.  6 Thoroughbreds will compete for the “Win and You’re In” automatic entry into the Breeders’ Cup Classic and the $1.25 million dollar purse.  The winner will also receive a blanket made of Marylou Whitney pink roses and a sterling silver chalice trophy with the Whitney family crest.

Considered one of the top Grade 1 races, the Whitney is named for the Whitney family.  Historically this family’s contributions to Thoroughbred racing have shaped the industry and blessed us with a vast number of graded stakes winners.  Marylou Whitney continues the tradition.  She has a home in Saratoga as well as a farm in my hometown, Lexington, KY.  The Whitney’s have won their own stakes race 4 times.

Last year’s Whitney winner was Honor CodeKelso and Discovery each won the race 3 times.

The 2016 Whitney field is as follows by post/horse/jockey/trainer/owner/age:

  1. El Kabeir/Ricardo Santana, Jr./John P. Terranova/Zayat Stables, LCC./4
  2. Comfort/John R, Velazquez/Todd A. Pletcher/Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners/4
  3. Upstart/Irad Ortiz Jr./Richard A. Violette, Jr./Ralph M. Evans and WinStar/4
  4. Frosted/Joel Rosario/Kiaran P. McLaughlin/Godolphin Racing, LCC./4
  5. Noble Bird/Julien R. Leparoux/Mark E. Casse/John C. Oxley/5
  6. Effinex/Mike E. Smith/James A. Jerkens/Tri-Bone Stables/5

El Kabeir is a beautiful grey colt by Scat Daddy and Great Venue El Kabeir ran his first 2 of 15 career starts at Saratoga. He is a multiple graded stakes winner though he has not won in 2016.

Comfort is a colt by Indian Charlie and Unkatzable Comfort has only raced 7 times and never at Saratoga nor has he won a graded stakes.  His jockey/trainer combo won the Whitney in 2013 with Cross Traffic.

Upstart is the son of Flatter, whom I wrote about in my last story when I met him while touring the stallions at Claiborne Farm.  Upstart’s dam is Party SilksUpstart won his maiden at Saratoga on his first start.  He has raced at that track 3 times of his 14 career races.  He is a multiple graded stakes winner.  He was fourth in last year’s Travers.

Frosted is the favorite for the Whitney.  He is another lovely grey colt.  He is the offspring of Tapit and Fast Cookie.  He raced at Saratoga in 3 of his 16 starts. He placed 2nd the 1st two times at that track and third the last time out there.  Those races were a maiden, the Jim Dandy and the Travers respectively.  He is coming off a strong win at Belmont in June.  In 2015 he finished the Belmont 2nd to our Grand Slam winner, American PharoahFrosted’s trainer, McLaughlin, won the Whitney with Invasor in 2006.

Noble Bird is the gorgeous horse in the photo.  I met him at Keeneland this past April.  I caught him with his tongue out as he ate a peppermint.  He is the son of Birdstone and AnyhowNoble Bird is trained by Casse, whom works with one of my favorite fillies, Tepin!  She is a Saratoga sales grad.  Noble Bird has raced at Saratoga once before in his 16 starts.  He is a multiple graded stakes winner.

Effinex is the son of Mineshaft and What A PearEffinex has the most experience with 24 career starts.  He has raced twice at Saratoga, where he finished 2nd in the Woodward Stakes.  He is a multiple graded stakes winner.  He was second to American Pharoah in last years BC Classic. His jockey, Smith, won the Whitney in 1993 with Brunswick.  The father of James A. Jerkens, the trainer of Effinex, trained Onion who beat the amazing Secretariat in 1973’s Whitney.

As if the Whitney isn’t enough action, there are 11 races on the card Saturday.  5 of those are stakes races and there is another stakes on Sunday.  Then the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Selected Yearling Sale takes place August 8th and 9th while my most favorite horse, Juba, races at Saratoga on the 8th as well.

I part own 5 horses that will be auctioned off at the sale.  3 will go on Monday and the 4th and 5th on Tuesday.  This sale is one of the first of the season and finest of sales for yearlings.  252 select yearlings have been catalogued for the 96th Saratoga Sale.

Juba is trained by Jerkens, just like Effinex and has the same jockey, Velazquez ,as Comfort.  Juba is a 5 year-old grey son of Tapit and Adoradancer.  That is the same sire that Frosted has.

If you are at Saratoga tell me all about it.  If you’re watching from a television or computer tune in to NBC Sports for race 10, the Whitney, at 6:18 pm EST on 8/6/16.  Find Juba, in race 8 at 5:02 pm EST on 8/8/16.  I’m hoping to see it on TVG.  Finally, follow along with the Fasig-Tipton sale on http://www.fasigtipton.com

Reimagined Red Mile

image(197)

Hello to all of my fellow horse fans.  I have been enjoying all the great racing for Kentucky Derby prep and otherwise good fun and competition.  I was hoping to make it to Turfway Park to see one of my favorite horses race live yesterday but that race proved to be a little too far away and too late.  However, I finally made it to the Red Mile to enjoy an evening of historical and simulcast racing.

image(196)

The Red Mile is a standardbred harness race track in Lexington, KY, my hometown.  Harness racing is not my favorite sport but I have been there a few times to see it.  The track length is a mile and it is composed of red clay thus the track’s name, Red Mile.  The 1st race there was on September 28, 1875,  There was no live racing at Red Mile yesterday, 3/18/16, rather the facility was remodeled last September to mark 140 years and to feature “Instant Racing”, simulcasting, dining and entertainment in addition to harness racing.  Keeneland went in with Red Mile to make it the fun place it is today.

image(195)

“Instant Racing”  is a lot like slot machines.  There are over 900 terminals featuring pari-mutual electronic games.  The games show historical racing on a small screen after you have picked 3 horses and made your bet.  I thought it was fun to play and I loved seeing all of the different tracks featured.

image(194)

After, I left the machines, with more money than I had brought with me, I checked out the areas for dining and the space for the live band.  The food looked appealing and affordable.  The band, Zed’s Dead, was entertaining.

image(192)

I also ventured up a floor to see all the simulcasting.  They had a handicapping contest taking place too.  The facility is nice, very clean and spacious with plenty of helpful staffing.  I was looking forward to watching a race at Turfway Park, in Florence, KY, set to post at 9:09 P.M. EST.

image(190)

I have had the good fortune of visiting with two of breeder, Lucy Bassett’s, horses since they first began training.  These two 3 year old fillies are Titled and Ma’am.  Before they were racing, these two horses lived at The Thoroughbred Center, a Keeneland affiliated farm in Lexington, KY.  They stayed and trained in Geoff Mulcahy’s barn.  He has been kind enough to let me watch him train them on a few occasions.   Now, Ma’am and Titled are training with Kenneth G. McPeek.  Ma’am was sired by Colonel John and her dam is Lady Siphonica.  Ma’am has Corey S. Nakatani  for a jockey and is owned by Lance, Greg and David Gasaway with David Hamby III.  Titled has Lily’s Girl for a dam and her sire was Scat DaddyTitled is still owned by Bassett and she has Sophie Doyle for her jockey.  Ma’am has raced 3 times at Oaklawn Park and she broke her maiden the last time out on 2/27/16.  Titled had her second career race last night.  She also got her start at Oaklawn.

image(191)

Titled has not broken her maiden yet.  It was still very exciting to see her come from the back of the pack to sweep third place last night.  I enjoyed wagering on her from the Red Mile and she paid $5.60.  I am pleased with both Ma’am and Titled and I’m looking forward to their next races.  I would love to see them race live and I’m still hoping to make it to Turfway Park in the near future.

image(193)

The Red Mile is an excellent place for various entertainment and simulcasting.  I imagine I will be back soon and I have my own rewards card now.  It was easy to get to, parking was plenty and free.  The facility is open year round from 10am to 2 pm Sunday thru Thursday and open 2 additional hours, until 4 am, on Friday and Saturday.  If you are planning a trip, check the Red Mile out here: Red Mile  Please, comment, like and share.  I will post a new story weekly or more often.  Thank you for your time!

Today our handicapper brings us one final tip for this weekend’s racing.  He says “Race 9 (bet on)#4, Queen of Scat.  Dale Roman’s trained daughter of Scat Daddy ran a solid second at Kentucky Downs last time out and should get to the wire first against a nice group of fillies in a nice allowance race on the turf Sunday.”

Today, at Keeneland, in Lexington, KY there are only 9 races.  The 9th race is an allowance with a purse of  $58,000 for fillies and mares 3 years or older.  It is a turf race of 1 and 1/16th miles.  Queen of Scat is a 3 year old filly owned by Frank L. Jones Jr.  Her trainer is Dale Romans and her jockey is Corey J. Lanerie.  Queen of Scat has had 12 career starts.  She has won once, placed 4 times and came in third twice.  Her sire, Scat Daddy, is a multiple graded stakes winner and a fantastic sire.  He stands at Ashford Stud in Lexington, KY.

I like to visit another Scat Daddy filly at The Thoroughbred Center, also in Lexington.  Her name is Titled, seen in the pictures above with Ma’am.  Sharing their trainer and owner, these 2 year old horses live and train in the same barn.  Ma’am was sired by Colonel John.  It is a lot of fun for me to watch them do their morning workouts and get bathed.  I am hoping they develop into fantastic race horses.

Please, enjoy the tip and have a great day at the races!

Update: Queen of Scat won.  She came in 1st.  I hope each of you made some money on this.

Super Summer Sale

PhotoGrid_1436547024255

Yesterday, 7/9/15, I took some time off to catch Fasig-Tipton’s “The July Sale”  which was followed by the “Summer Selected Horses of Racing Age Sale” live at their Lexington, KY location.  It was a great time and I am looking forward to watching the future of these Thoroughbreds play out on the race tracks!

Fasig-Tipton is a premier Thoroughbred auction company with its Lexington location being established in 1972.  The July Sale is the first United States Yearling sale of 2015.  Hips 1 through 332 and 401 through 524 were featured in the barns, walking ring and sales pavilion.  I came 2 hours early to walk the barns.  It was a beautiful, cooler summer morning and fortunately dry to start, though we did get some sprinkles throughout the day.  The horses were gorgeous and the grass appeared to be a real treat.  Yum, fresh Kentucky Bluegrass!  I watched as the horses were brushed and shown to some eager perspective buyers.  Then I made a hasty dash to a bar stool, within the entrance to the sales pavilion.  I was seated right off the walking ring, to see the sale that started at 10 am.  I stayed there until nearly 3 pm watching the horses and people as I enjoyed a nice salad. I am fortunate to have made many great connections and I encountered several of these wonderful horse enthusiast throughout the day.

One of my first such connections of the day stopped by to ask me if I watched the show, “Mad Men”.  I do not but I was curious as to why he would ask and he told me that Hip 6 had an interesting back story.  His dam is Her Smile.  She is a graded stakes winner and showed in the Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint in 2011. The more interesting fact is that while she is now owned by Frank Stronach, breeder and owner of horses and of prominent racetracks and Adena Springs Farms, Her Smile has been owned by both Bobby Flay, celebrity chef and horse owner, and Bill Backer, ad executive and creator of the Coca-Cola ad jingle, “I’d Like to Buy the World a Coke” used in a 1971 commercial and as the finale of television show  “Mad Men” that ended in May 2015.  Her hip #6 colt sold for $280,000 to De Meric Stables.

The rest of my day was full of more exciting stories and people but don’t forget, the focus was those magnificent horses. I was still there to see hip #152, a colt of Scat Daddy, sell for $385,000.  Scat Daddy had sired 4 horses listed in the auction.  One of those fillies, #220, was marked out but his other filly, #281, sold for $300,000 and his other colt, #105, sold for $110,000.  #152 has Starbourne for his mare.  Scat Daddy, who stands at Ashford Stud, currently has sired 10 stakes winners including El Kabeir winner of 2014 and 2015 multiple graded stakes.

PhotoGrid_1436547678312

In all The July Sale ended late but was a success.  205 yearlings were sold for a total of $20,005,000.  The sale had 7 yearlings go for $300,000 or more each.  18 others sold for $200,000 or better.  The average price was over $97,000 and the median was over $77,000, with both of those figures being up from the previous year, while the buy back rate went down, at 29%. #317 brought in the biggest price at $500,000.  She is a filly by sire, Tapit and French Dip, her mare. Bred at Gainesway Farm, she sold to agent Steven Young.  Tapit currently stands at Gainesway.  He is the leading 2014 and 2015 sire.  This filly was the only Tapit yearling at auction.  His other offspring include 12 stakes winners.  One of these is Frosted, 4th in this year’s Kentucky Derby and 2nd in the 2015 Belmont Stakes.

PhotoGrid_1436548004535

Before, I had to rush back to work I made a trip out with a friend to see one of the Taylor Made Sales Agency barns.  I Saw some nice horses for the later sale there.  #421 Mizzen Moon went on to sell for $57,000 and # 503 Seely Rose brought in $40,000.

PhotoGrid_1436547452625

I was long gone by the time the “Summer Sale Horses of Racing Age Sale” began.  Somewhere around 9 pm, the last horse to go through the auction brought in the biggest money.  The victor was #524, Temper Mint Patty, for $350,000.  In this sale 65 horse sold for $3,996,000.  The average price was $61,477 and the median was $48,000.  Last year 109 horses were sold with a superior average but a lesser median.

PhotoGrid_1436548116161

The next Fasig-Tipton Sale is “The Saratoga Sale” in August.  I won’t be able to make the trip to New York so please, share with me if you attend.  Our 2015 and 12th Triple Crown winner, American Pharoah, was offered as hip #85 in the 2013 Saratoga Sale.  You could buy the next winner or at least take a chance.  Happy shopping!
