Two, Scat Daddy sisters, race at Churchill Downs

What a week it has been.  Since my last post I have attended Thoroughbred sales at both Fasig-Tipton and Keeneland and live racing at Churchill Downs.  I have witnessed the sale of champions like Tepin, Stellar Wind, Catch A Glimpse and Songbird, seen the weanling foals of sires like American Pharoah and Medaglia d’ Oro and enjoyed racing at the home of the Kentucky Derby.  A common thread at the auctions and the track are the impressive and primarily female offspring of the late Scat Daddy.

Last week was bittersweet.  There were plenty of new and returning champions on the racing scene but a personal favorite retired.  Tepin, Queen of the Turf,  has chosen to quit racing and her connections obliged.  Fortunately, Tepin retired sound.  The big question now is, who will fill Tepin’s horseshoes?

As foaling season continues in the Bluegrass I decided to take a unique farm tour.  It was very different from my regular visits to see stallions.  This week’s Thoroughbred adventure took place at Saxony Farm in Lexington, KY, where I saw foals, mares, a gelding, retired horses, Sam the barn cat and Thoroughbreds that are training for new careers.

Spoiler alert: You are looking at the two time Horse of the Year and the Older Dirt Male winner of the 2016 Eclipse Awards, California Chrome!
Spoiler alert: You are looking at the two time Horse of the Year and the Older Dirt Male winner of the 2016 Eclipse Awards, California Chrome!

The results are in!  Last night, the 2016 Eclipse Award winners were announced.  Congratulations to the connections of all the 46th annual award winners.

The Eclipse Awards were originated in 1971.  These awards are given to the most elite of North American Racing in 17 horse and human categories as well as media and people worthy of lifetime achievement recognition.  The name Eclipse was derived in honor of the great sire EclipseEclipse was foaled during a solar eclipse in 1764.  He was sired by Marske and his dam was Spilletta.  Eclipse did not race until he was 5 years-old.  He was undefeated.  He won 18 races consecutively and then retired because he had no one to race with.  8 of his 18 wins were walkovers.  He simply had no competition entered in his races because no one dared to try to match him.  Therefore, he retired to stud in 1771.  He was an amazing stallion.  His offspring, of up to 400 winners, have gone on to make him part of the pedigree in most Thoroughbred horses.  Secretariat and Phar Lap got their oversized heart from the Eclipse line.

On January, 21, 2017 the 2016 Eclipse Awards winners were announced beginning at 8 P.M. EST at Sport of Kings Theater, part of Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Florida.  Tickets to attend were $425 or it could be watched via TVG2 or multiple streaming services.  Last night’s awards were presented to the best horses, jockeys, trainers, owners, breeders, racing media, handicapper and 2 awards of Merit.  The panel of judges was appointed by the Daily Racing Form, the National Turf Writers and Broadcasters and the National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA).  The awards were organized by the National Thoroughbred Racing Association and presented by the Breeders’ Cup, the Daily Racing Form and the Stronach Group.

Prior to last evening’s presentation the recipients were announced in the following categories:

  • Merit – Andrew Beyer and Steven Crist.  Beyer is retired from writing for the Washington Post.  He is the creator of Beyer Speed Figures as detailed in his best selling book, “Picking Winners”.  Crist is a retired writer from the New York Times.  He was the founder, chairman and publisher of The Racing Times and chairman/publisher of The Daily Racing Form.  He created the category for the horseplayer of the year.  He has served on New York’s advisory commission on racing and he was the vice-president of the New York Racing Association.
  • National Horseplayer of the Year – Paul Matties, winner of the National Handicapping Championship
  • Media Awards – NBC, ESPN, Jay Houdey, Barbara Livingston, Molly McGill, Todd Marks, The Paulick Report, John Scheinman and Natalie Voss.  NBC won for television and live programming, ESPN for television and feature programming.  Houdey, Livingston and McGill won together for the Daily Racing Forms multimedia.  Marks won for photography.  Paulick and Scheinman won for feature commentary.  Voss was awarded for news/enterprise.

Last night we discovered those honored with the remaining awards:

  1. Horse of the Year: California Chrome, at 6 years-old Chrome has one more race, the Pegasus World Cup, before he retires to stud at Taylor Made Farm.  He has won 16 of 26 starts in his lifetime.  He won 7 of 8 races in 2016.  He was the winner of the Dubai World Cup last year.  He won the horse of the year in 2014 too.  He also received the fan voted award for the NTRA Moment of the Year for his Dubai World Cup race.
  2. 3 Year-Old Filly: Songbird, winning 11 of 12 races this filly is special.  Her only loss was her photo-finish to Beholder in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff.  Her votes were unanimous.
  3. 3 Year-Old Male: Arrogate, the only horse to beat Chrome in 2016.  He has won 5 of 6 races.  He won the Travers Stakes and the BC Classic.  He will compete again in the much anticipated Pegasus World Cup on 1/28.
  4. 2 Year-Old Filly: Champagne Room, has won twice from 5 starts.  She won the BC Juvenile Fillies Stakes in her last race of 2016.  She is ranked number one on the Kentucky Oaks leader board.
  5. 2 Year Old Male: Classic Empire, has won 4 of 5 career races.  His only loss was actually due to the fact he tossed his jockey.  His final race of 2016 was the BC Juvenile, which he won.  He holds the top spot on the Road to the Kentucky Derby leader board.
  6. Older Dirt Female: Beholder, she now has 4 Eclipse Awards, she won as a 2YO and a 3YO and now twice for older in 2015 and 2016 consecutively.  Beholder has won 18 of 26 starts.  She won the BC Distaff in 2016 and is now retired as a broodmare.  Hopefully she will have an Uncle Mo foal in 2018.
  7. Older Dirt Male: California Chrome, now has 4 Eclipse Awards.  In 2014 he was Champion 3 Year-Old Colt.
  8. Female Sprinter: Finest City, is 5 years-old and has won 5 of 15 starts.  She won the BC Filly and Mare Sprint in 2016.  Yesterday, she won the Santa Monica Stakes.
  9. Male Sprinter: Drefong, is a 4 year-old colt who has won the last 5 of 6 races including the BC Sprint.
  10. Female Turf Horse: Tepin, is one of my favorites.  She is 6 years-old and she is still racing.  She will be entered on 2/11 in Tampa Bay Downs Endeavor Stakes.  She won the Turf Horse/Grass Mare in 2015 too.
  11. Male Turf Horse: Flintshire, is a 9 year-old with 8 wins in 24 starts.  Only his first two races were not graded stakes and in 21 races he has finished in the money.  Flintshire has placed second in the BC Turf twice.
  12. Steeplechase Horse: Rawnaq, is a nine year-old and deserves congratulations.  He does not flat race.
  13. Trainer of the Year: Chad Brown earned his first Eclipse Award.  He trained New Money Honey for her win in the BC Fillies Turf in 2016.  He has won many BC races over the years.  He trained for 763 races in 2016 and won 182 of those.
  14. Breeder of the Year: WinStar Farm won this award for the first time.  They made the most in earnings this year, collecting over $10 million dollars.  They also had the most graded wins in 2016.
  15. Jockey of the Year: Javier Castellano won his 4th consecutive Eclipse award last night.  He was New Money Honey’s jockey in her BC win.  Castellano was ranked 4th by wins in 2016.
  16. Apprentice Jockey of the Year: Luis M. Ocasio won his first Eclipse Award last evening.  He was 93rd in earnings in 2016.  He will be keeping busy at Parx Racing and Penn National this week.
  17. Owner of the Year: Juddmonte Farms, owner of Arrogate, took this Eclipse for the third time.  They ranked second in earnings in 2016.

Thank you for all the award recipients for their contributions to the Thoroughbred industry.  Also, thank you for the money they raised last night at the live auction during the ceremony.  Over $80 thousand dollars were collected for Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance.  I am proud of all the fine people and horses that make my favorite sport better.

Thank you for continuing to read and share my webpage.  My next post will get us up to speed on the upcoming Pegasus World Cup.

Ack Ack Handicap Runhappy

There’s an old Irish saying that says just about anything you want it to.  One of those being, “The best horse doesn’t always win the race.”  I know of a few of the very best horses that even when they don’t win, they at least run happy.  I caught up with Runhappy, himself, this weekend at Churchill Downs in Louisville, KY.  He was head bobbing along through the paddock with a smile on his face.  He is featured in the 1st three pictures.

Runhappy Ack Ack Handicap

Runhappy is a 4 year old colt sired by Super Saver.  His dam is Bella JolieHap, as he is affectionately named, is a Kentucky bred horse.  He usually lives at the Thoroughbred Training Center with his cat, Sancho, in my hometown of Lexington, KY.  Hap, is owned by James McIngvale.  He had Edgar S. Prado for a jockey in his last race.  He will use Gary Stevens in his next race.  Laura Wohlers is his current trainer.  Runhappy has had 9 career starts and he has won 7 times.  He was sidelined for all of this year until the G3, Ack Ack Handicap this past Saturday, 10/1/16.  He finished up a 6 race winning streak in December with a win in the Grade 1, Malibu Stakes at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, CA.  He spent most of this summer healing from a bruised cannon bone.  Hap returned to racing this past weekend in preparation for the $1 million dollar Las Vegas Breeders’ Cup Mile this November at Santa Anita.  Last year, Runhappy won the BC Sprint and earned himself an Eclipse Award for 2015 Champion Sprinter.  His connections are working with him to do the same with the BC Mile.

Runhappy takes 4th in the Ack Ack

The 24th running of the Ack Ack Handicap at Churchill Downs was a stakes race for horses 3 years olds and upward.  It was a 1 mile race on the dirt and carried a purse of $100,000.  The race is named for Ack Ack, a 1986 United States Racing Hall of Fame inductee and three time 1971 Eclipse Award winner.  Ack Ack also went on to be a wonderful stallion at Claiborne Farm producing many more stakes winners.

Ack Ack Handicap 2016

Hap was one of 6 horses in the race this year.  He unfortunately came in 4th, after a lead near the start.  His connections still intend to ship him to California for the November BC Mile.  Many feel he will continue to improve.  Runhappy will also race in the 1st ever Pegasus World Cup on 1/28/17.  The Pegasus will carry a $12million dollar purse, the world’s richest horse race.

Tom's Ready

Tom’s Ready, seen above,  was the winner of the Ack Ack Handicap.  He will also be targeting the BC Mile this year.

Tepin won the BC Mile last year.  She is a contender to do so again.  Tepin will race at Keeneland, in Lexington, KY, on opening weekend.  She is entered in the First Lady Stakes, race 7 on 10/8/16.  Post time is 4:35 P.M. EST.  Tepin won the First Lady last year.

Mr. Z

My beloved, Mr. Z, seen above, finished 6th in the Ack Ack on Saturday.  It was his first race of this year but his 21st career start.  He raced in the BC Mile last year as well.  I was really pulling for him in the Ack Ack and he was leading at the half-mile. I do not know the current plans for his next race.

Irish Saying

Churchill’s September Meet ended on October 2nd but thankfully Keeneland’s Fall Meet starts on the 7th and will continue thru the 29th.  I will attend as often as possible to bring you more photos and stories.  If there is any Thoroughbred in the Keeneland meet that you really want pictures of, please comment and I’ll give it a try.  Thank you and check back for a new post each week.

Tepin is Pretty in Pink

She’s sexy and she knows it!  Fan favorite, Tepin, will race again on Saturday.  This is one special mare.  I last saw her win the 28th Coolmore Jenny Wiley Stakes at Keeneland’s Spring Meet, this past April. I got her picture, above, as she walked towards the paddock with a smile on her face.  She raced from post position 8 that day and broke a 20 year stakes record by finishing 5 lengths ahead after covering 1 and 1/16 miles in 1:40.53.  She will break from post 8 once again this weekend.  Post 8 is assigned a pink saddle cloth.  Turf queen, Tepin, will be the only lady in the field.  I’m betting we might see Miss Pretty in Pink race on to her 8th straight win.

Tepin was bred in Kentucky and she was born in March of 2011.  She is the offspring of Bernstein and Life Happened.  Last year, Tepin won the Breeders’ Cup Mile and earned her 1st Eclipse Award.  She has won 12 of 20 career starts and she began a winning streak, when I first saw her race, that has not stopped.  She won the Grade 1, First Lady Stakes, in October 2015 at Keeneland.  That is when she first caught my eye.  I saw her win the BC Mile that same month and then I saw her win the Jenny Wiley, all at Keeneland.  There have been 4 other wins mixed into the streak.  Her last win was on her 1st international trip.  Tepin won the Grade 1, Queen Anne Stakes at Ascot Racecourse in England this past June.  She was the 1st American based horse to win the Queen Anne and she beat a field of male horses, which is becoming rather usual for her.  I have written about her before, so use the search button on my website for additional background information.  Now, Tepin has shipped to Canada to continue her reign as an international superstar.

The race I don’t want to miss on Saturday, 9/17/16, is the Ricoh Woodbine Miles Stakes.  This race will take place at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto in the Providence of Ontario of Canada.  It is the 12th and final race at Woodbine on Saturday.  The post time is 6:39 PM EDT, which, conveniently for me, makes it the same time for EST.  This race was inaugurated in 1988.  It is a 1 mile turf race with a $1 million dollar purse for horses age 3 and older.  It is part of the BC “Win and You’re In” challenge for an automatic berth into the BC Mile.  Wise Dan holds the speed record,  in the Woodbine Mile, with  a time of 1:31.75.  He won both the Woodbine Mile and BC Mile in 2012 and again in 2013.

Tepin’s regular jockey, Julien Leparoux, won the Woodbine Mile in 2011 with Turallure.  Leparoux is an outstanding jockey and he won Eclipse Awards in 2006 and 2009.  Tepin’s trainer, Mark E, Casse, nor her owner, Robert E. Masterson have won the Woodmile Mile yet.

The 8 horse field is a follows by post/horse/jockey/trainer/age:

  1. Tower of Texas/Eurico Rosa Da Silva/Rodger L. Attfield/5 YO
  2. Mutakayyef/Dane O’Neill/William J. Haggas/5 YO
  3. Arod/Oisin Murphey/Peter W. Chappel-Hyam/5 YO
  4. Glenville Gardens/Gary Boulanger/Sid C. Attard/4 YO
  5. Full Mast/Joel Rosario/William I. Mott/4 YO
  6. Passion for Action/Luis Contreras/Michael P. De Paulo/4 YO
  7. Mr. Owen/Jamie P. Spencer/Francois Rohaut/4 YO
  8. Tepin/Julien Leparoux/Mark E. Casse/5 YO

I hope Tepin beats the boys again!  It’s Tepin Time!

Meanwhile, I’m back at the Keeneland Sales in Lexington, KY which continue thru Sunday, September 25th.  I was present 2 of the 3 days of Book 1.  Today book 2 of 6 is taking place. Book 1 went well with the number of yearlings sold at 346 versus 443 in 2015.  The price fell to a little over $120 million dollars versus more than $134 million in the prior year.  However the average and median prices rose to more than $347 thousand dollars and $300 thousand dollars respectively.  The biggest seller so far went for $3 million dollars.  I’ll share more photos and news and the conclusion of the entire yearling sale.

Waiting on the Whitney

Woo hoo for the Whitney!  The 87th running of the Whitney Handicap will take place tomorrow, August 6,2016 at Saratoga in Saratoga Springs, NY.  If I could click my heels and go anywhere right now, I’d be at “The Spa”.

The Whitney Handicap was inaugurated in 1928.  It has been at various tracks for different genders, ages and distances historically.  Tomorrow, the Whitney will take place on Saratoga’s dirt track.  It will be a race of 9 furlongs (1 and 1/8 mile) for horses 3 years old and upwards.  6 Thoroughbreds will compete for the “Win and You’re In” automatic entry into the Breeders’ Cup Classic and the $1.25 million dollar purse.  The winner will also receive a blanket made of Marylou Whitney pink roses and a sterling silver chalice trophy with the Whitney family crest.

Considered one of the top Grade 1 races, the Whitney is named for the Whitney family.  Historically this family’s contributions to Thoroughbred racing have shaped the industry and blessed us with a vast number of graded stakes winners.  Marylou Whitney continues the tradition.  She has a home in Saratoga as well as a farm in my hometown, Lexington, KY.  The Whitney’s have won their own stakes race 4 times.

Last year’s Whitney winner was Honor CodeKelso and Discovery each won the race 3 times.

The 2016 Whitney field is as follows by post/horse/jockey/trainer/owner/age:

  1. El Kabeir/Ricardo Santana, Jr./John P. Terranova/Zayat Stables, LCC./4
  2. Comfort/John R, Velazquez/Todd A. Pletcher/Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners/4
  3. Upstart/Irad Ortiz Jr./Richard A. Violette, Jr./Ralph M. Evans and WinStar/4
  4. Frosted/Joel Rosario/Kiaran P. McLaughlin/Godolphin Racing, LCC./4
  5. Noble Bird/Julien R. Leparoux/Mark E. Casse/John C. Oxley/5
  6. Effinex/Mike E. Smith/James A. Jerkens/Tri-Bone Stables/5

El Kabeir is a beautiful grey colt by Scat Daddy and Great Venue El Kabeir ran his first 2 of 15 career starts at Saratoga. He is a multiple graded stakes winner though he has not won in 2016.

Comfort is a colt by Indian Charlie and Unkatzable Comfort has only raced 7 times and never at Saratoga nor has he won a graded stakes.  His jockey/trainer combo won the Whitney in 2013 with Cross Traffic.

Upstart is the son of Flatter, whom I wrote about in my last story when I met him while touring the stallions at Claiborne Farm.  Upstart’s dam is Party SilksUpstart won his maiden at Saratoga on his first start.  He has raced at that track 3 times of his 14 career races.  He is a multiple graded stakes winner.  He was fourth in last year’s Travers.

Frosted is the favorite for the Whitney.  He is another lovely grey colt.  He is the offspring of Tapit and Fast Cookie.  He raced at Saratoga in 3 of his 16 starts. He placed 2nd the 1st two times at that track and third the last time out there.  Those races were a maiden, the Jim Dandy and the Travers respectively.  He is coming off a strong win at Belmont in June.  In 2015 he finished the Belmont 2nd to our Grand Slam winner, American PharoahFrosted’s trainer, McLaughlin, won the Whitney with Invasor in 2006.

Noble Bird is the gorgeous horse in the photo.  I met him at Keeneland this past April.  I caught him with his tongue out as he ate a peppermint.  He is the son of Birdstone and AnyhowNoble Bird is trained by Casse, whom works with one of my favorite fillies, Tepin!  She is a Saratoga sales grad.  Noble Bird has raced at Saratoga once before in his 16 starts.  He is a multiple graded stakes winner.

Effinex is the son of Mineshaft and What A PearEffinex has the most experience with 24 career starts.  He has raced twice at Saratoga, where he finished 2nd in the Woodward Stakes.  He is a multiple graded stakes winner.  He was second to American Pharoah in last years BC Classic. His jockey, Smith, won the Whitney in 1993 with Brunswick.  The father of James A. Jerkens, the trainer of Effinex, trained Onion who beat the amazing Secretariat in 1973’s Whitney.

As if the Whitney isn’t enough action, there are 11 races on the card Saturday.  5 of those are stakes races and there is another stakes on Sunday.  Then the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Selected Yearling Sale takes place August 8th and 9th while my most favorite horse, Juba, races at Saratoga on the 8th as well.

I part own 5 horses that will be auctioned off at the sale.  3 will go on Monday and the 4th and 5th on Tuesday.  This sale is one of the first of the season and finest of sales for yearlings.  252 select yearlings have been catalogued for the 96th Saratoga Sale.

Juba is trained by Jerkens, just like Effinex and has the same jockey, Velazquez ,as Comfort.  Juba is a 5 year-old grey son of Tapit and Adoradancer.  That is the same sire that Frosted has.

If you are at Saratoga tell me all about it.  If you’re watching from a television or computer tune in to NBC Sports for race 10, the Whitney, at 6:18 pm EST on 8/6/16.  Find Juba, in race 8 at 5:02 pm EST on 8/8/16.  I’m hoping to see it on TVG.  Finally, follow along with the Fasig-Tipton sale on http://www.fasigtipton.com

The 141st running of the Grade I Preakness Stakes will take place this Saturday, 5/21/16.  I will be betting on Nyquist (update: that is him pictured above), our latest Kentucky Derby winner!  He was just announced as the morning line favorite with 3/5 morning-line odds immediately following the post position draw.  Here is the full field:

  11. Stradivari/John Velazquez/Todd Pletcher/John Gunther, Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith and John Magnier/8-1

While the Preakness Stakes is eligible to 14 Thoroughbreds only these 11 will be participating.  That is 3 more than last year’s small field when American Pharoah became the 14th horse to take the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes.  He went on to win at the Belmont Stakes and the Breeders’ Cup Classic to become our 12th Triple Crown winner and our first Grand Slam winner.  The competition is tough to see if Nyquist can follow in those horseshoes.

Cherry Wine was an “also eligible” as the 22nd horse in a 20 post position race for the Kentucky Derby but he did not get his chance that day.  He is a lovely grey late bloomer.  It took him 5 starts to break his maiden.  His last 2 of 8 career races were graded stakes.  He finished 4th in the Rebel Stakes and then 3rd in the Blue Grass Stakes.  In all he has 2 wins, 1 place and has come in third twice.  American Pharoah won from post position 1 in last year’s Preakness.

Uncle Lino wasn’t in the Kentucky Derby.  His last race out was the California Chrome Stakes.  He finished 1st place with his only win since he broke his maiden his second start.  Out of his 7 races he has been twice at each 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.  He has has finished in the top four of all three of his graded stakes, Robert B. Lewis, San Felipe and Santa Anita Derby.  His sire is Uncle Mo, making him a half brother to Nyquist and Laoban and Abiding Star.

Nyquist is the favorite and I have written about him a few times if you want a more complete history on him check on my webpage, ThoroughbredU.com.  He is undefeated in 8 starts and he wants to keep that title.  He just won the KY Derby by 1 and 1/4 lengths on 5/7/16.  California Chrome won the Preakness from post position 3 in 2014.  Secretariat liked this post in 1973.

Awesome Speed has finished 1st in 4 of his 6 career starts however, he was 4th in his only graded stakes race, the Fountain of Youth.  His connections have noted that he has bumped around a lot in his last couple of races.  He is a pacemaker in his running style.

Exaggerator ran an exciting late sprint to earn 2nd to Nyquist in the KY Derby.  He is 1 of only 3 horses from that race to step up to the Preakness challenge.  His sire, Curlin, won the 2007 Preakness.  To read more about Exaggerator, look back to my KY derby story.

Lani is the final horse to return from this past KY Derby.  This lovely grey son of Tapit finished 9th in the KY Derby.  Lani is described in more detail in my former KY Derby story.  His dam sire, Sunday Silence, won the Preakness in 1989.

Collected is trained by Bob Baffert.  Baffert has won the Preakness with Silver Charm, Real Quiet, Point Given, War Emblem, Lookin At Lucky and American Pharoah.  In 6 career starts, Collected has 4 wins and a finish in 2nd place as well.  He has won 2 of his 4 graded stakes races.  These were the Cecile B. DeMille, Sham, Southwest and Lexington Stakes.

Laoban was the other “also eligible” that missed the KY Derby by a post.  One of the 4 sired by Uncle Mo he is a front runner but also he has never won a race!  Despite that, his connections have raced him 5 times and 3 of those where graded stakes, the Sham, Gotham and Blue Grass Stakes.

Abiding Star is the 4th and final horse sired by Uncle Mo in this race.  He has had an amazing 11 career starts in which he has won 5 times and finished at 2nd and 3rd place each once.  It took him 7 times to break his maiden.  He has never ran in a graded stakes race, however he is on a five race winning streak.

Fellowship is trained by Mark Casse.  He is the trainer of one of my favorite Thoroughbreds, TepinFellowship has had a total of 12 starts.  He has finished 1st two times and 2nd and 3rd three times each.  He raced at Churchill Downs on KY Derby day in the Pat Day Mile where he finished fourth.  That race was his fourth graded stakes race.  He is of the Secretariat lineage.

Stradivari is the final horse in the Preakness.  He has only been in 3 races.  He won the last two.  These were not stakes races.  To my personal surprise, his trainer Todd Pletcher, despite all his fame, has never won the Preakness.  Pletcher was 3rd in 2000 with Impeachment.

Preakness Fun Facts:

  • the food of the day, crabcakes
  • the flower, Black-Eyed Susans
  • the blanket is actually made of Viking Poms
  • the race is “The Run for the Black-Eyed Susans”
  • the song, “Maryland, My Maryland”
  • the trophy, a silver replica of the 1860 Woodlawn Vase
  • the track record, 1:55 set by Secretariat
  • the drink is also the Black-Eyed Susan
  • post time is 6:45 PM EST
  • NBCSN will televise starting at 2:30 PM EST
  • NBC will televise starting at 6:30 PM EST
  • Pimlico starts racing at 10:30 AM EST that day and the Preakness is the 13th race
  • the race is 1 and 3/16 miles or 9.5 furlongs on the dirt
  • the race is for 3YO Thoroughbreds

I hope everyone finds this info useful and helpful for their Preakness Stakes planning.  Check back after the race for another blog post.  Go, Nyquist, go!  Let’s wish the rain holds off this year.

Over all too soon.  Yesterday was the closer for Keeneland’s Spring Meet.  Live racing took place from April 8-29, 2016.  I was there for the final day of racing and it was too much of a good time to be sad that it was all about to end.

Keeneland’s meet was quite a success story with plenty of excitement and quality races, horses, owners, trainers and jockeys.  The handle was up over 23% versus last Spring and the attendance was up over 4%.  I had the pleasure of attending 6 times and the weather was quite pleasant each of those days.  Keeneland credits the appeal of the Breeders’ Cup, that they hosted in October, with the returning fans and Thoroughbreds.  They also believe that having Nyquist, the 2016 Kentucky Derby favorite, living and training on the grounds added a special attraction.  I certainly agree.  Nyquist had his last Derby prep work at Keeneland on closing day and then shipped to Churchill Downs today.  He is featured in most of the pictures throughout this post.  I watched him work once again prior to the races yesterday.  He breezed a mile in 1:41 with Mario Gutierrez on board.

45 horses that participated in the Breeders’ Cup in October returned to Keeneland this meet to race or train.  Ralis is seen in the top photo with Nyquist.  Other BC horses on the grounds this meet were Tepin, Ready for Rye, Barbados, Rachel’s Valentina, Nickname, Camelot Kitten, Ma Can Do It, Limosine Liberal, I’m A Chatterbox, Dacita, Azar, Thrilled, Private Zone, Land Over Sea, Bradester, Green Mask, Riker, Recepta, Holly Boss, Dothraki Queen, Fioretti, Gilding By, Red Rifle, Salama, Shinning Copper, Curlina, Right There, Grand Arch, Siding Spring, Catch A Glimpse, Wavell Avenue, Stopchargingmaria, Sheer Drama, Undrafted, Brody’s Cause, Da Big Hoss, Something Extra, Swipe, The Great War, War Envoy, Twilight Eclipse, Super Majesty and Tourist.

As for the people who help make this sport awesome, many big names were present this meet.  Javier Castellano was the leading jockey with 17 wins.  He won that title last Spring as well.  Ken and Sarah Ramsey are owners who won 9 races at Keeneland this meet. They are Keeneland’s leading owners for the 17th time.  The leading trainer was won by Michael Maker, his 4th time earning this title.  Many more Hall of Fame, Eclipse Award and Graded Stakes winning jockeys, owners and trainers were in attendance for this Spring as well.

I really had a great time at Keeneland, as always.  I am really going to miss the track that won’t have live racing again until October.  I thought that watching Nyquist work was a real joy.  I appreciate that the horse’s connections and Keeneland were kind enough to share the experience.  I wrote a story about a prior work a few weeks ago

My Eye On Nyquist

I hope Nyquist wins the Kentucky Derby next week on May 7th.  The success of American Pharoah has me eager for another Grand Slam.  Nyquist is a champion and he looks ready to win.  The 20 horse field won’t be finalized until Wednesday, 5/4/16.  Look for me to bring you the information you may need for the 142nd running of the Kentucky Derby.

Tepin, She Can Run…

Tepin can run but she can’t hide.  Well, actually she is very good at that as well.  I have seen Tepin before but I was really hoping to see her up closer while she was in town for the Jenny Wiley 1 week ago today, on 4/16/16.  Alas, better luck next time.  I still got some nice paddock and track photos and she was amazing again as she broke a track record and won by 5 lengths.

Search my site and it is easy to see my interest in Tepin’s star power.  I have written about her before.  I first took notice of Tepin on 10/3/15 when I watched her win the Grade 1, First Lady Stakes at Keeneland race track in Lexington, KY.  That was actually her 14th career start.  It was her 2nd race and win at Keeneland, where she broke her maiden as early as 10/6/13.  I didn’t have to wait long to see her again.  She triumphed in the Breeders’ Cup Mile on 10/31/15, also held at Keeneland.

Tepin has quite the fan following now and she has earned it.  This year she has won 3 Graded stakes as a 5 year old and is tied with Songbird for the top rank in the American Graded Stakes Standings.  Tepin has had 18 career starts including 10 wins, 3 place finishes and 1 time with a show.  She is an Eclipse Winner and she is on a winning steak, 5 races deep.  In 2016 she won the Grade 3 Lambholm South Endeavour Stakes at Tampa Bay, the Grade 2 Hillsborough Stakes, also at Tampa Bay and now the Grade 1 Coolmore Jenny Wiley Stakes at Keeneland.  She set a record in the Hillsborough and then again in the Jenny Wiley.  Her earnings stand at $2,895,873.

Tepin has Julien Leparoux for her jockey.  She is owned by Robert E. Masterson and trained by Mark Casse and his son/assistant Norman Casse.  She is the offspring of sire Bernstein and dam Life Happened.

Now what will Tepin do next?  She is nominated for the 29th running of the Grade 1, $500,000, Woodford Reserve Turf Classic!  Kentucky Derby Day just got a little more fantastic if Tepin runs in the Woodford at Churchill Downs on Derby Day, Saturday, 5/7/16.  Fingers crossed she will enter the field of 14 to hit the 1 and 1/18 miles of turf.  Wise Dan won the Woodford twice in 2013 and 2014.  After that she may head to Great Britain to take on the 1 mile Queen Anne Stakes on opening day of the Royal Ascot meeting on Tuesday 6/16/16.

Watching Tepin win is a joy I could never get tired of.  She makes is look so fun and easy.  I hope when she is done being a turf star that she will live her life here in Kentucky, where she was bred.  Perhaps, then I can meet her on a farm tour and maybe she will breed some other fast fillies!  Below, I included the song that came to mind when titling today’s story.  Phil Collins and a cute dog too!  Thank you for reading.  Look for my story next week, please.  Keeneland has right under a week to go and I’m going back to bring you more stories and pictures.
